I had the same "thats it " response whe I tried my now discontinued helll baby pickups. I wish I could still get them.

Hey wade have any he'll baby like projects going on?

Next month I'm doing a small run for a customer. I have the G& L custom Jerry Cantrell humbuckers to do this month due in 30 days and launching so I'm not doing any rewinds or special orders until early March

Very excited.... just place an order for a 2nd Degree Black Belt for the bridge of one of my guitars. I have the Detroiter in my Les Paul and I just took the Pearly Gates taken out of the bridge of my Ibanez semi hollow. Gonna try the BB in the Paul first and then decide if I want to keep it in the LP or put it in the Ibanez.

Jerry talks you guys up in his gear run down vid. I was gonna post that but you took care of it for me. I need some picksups for my old trust rusty SG. Will be hitting your site and checking out options.

Wade, what would be a good choice for an alder-bodied G&L Invader (maple neck/ebony board)? Currently using a JB and it's not bad, but I'm looking for something with a good punchy hard rock tone that can get vintage as well and clean up well.

Relatively easy to play but not too much compression. Something with complex overtones in the highs and "juicy"! Tall order as usual:)

+1.... I've got the same question, only a Strat, w/ Rosewood.....

LOL, Alright! Um. I'd say a slightly underwound Afwayu has some serious chew to the notes in an alder s style guitar. Its not as boxy and hollow in the mids and upper highs as the JB. Its alot different i think.

Same thing = Underwound Afwayu. I use that word 'underwound" scarce- Just a slight less turn count and clip between the coils. It really doesn't warrant a new pickup model. If you guys are using Dave's amps, omg! Insanely gorgeous. I'm still absolutely in shock over the Friedman amps.

Gotta plug Wade too. Have some Angel Dust Humbuckers on the way for my Strat and just snatched Rob's Suhr guitar (from Tone Merchants) which also has the AD Humbuckers. Thanks to Rob for cuttin loose with the guitar and thanks to Wade. He's friendly, cool and takes the time to talk about what's gonna work for your guitar. Absolutely blown away by the tone and versatility of his pick-ups in the Suhr. Anything from clean and bellsy to smokin bottom end distortion. Freakin great!

I was wondering about the 2nd DBB for a Les Paul. Thing is this les Paul a Slash Goldtop is very lightweight and resonant, but its NOT the typical LP, it is pretty bright sounding. I have struggle to find a pickup suited for it.

I have tried Alnico Pro II, and a set of BKP Rebel Yells that were really trebly, I couldn't even dial it out playing with the pickup height...

Would the 2DBB suit a bright guitar, I have 550K CTS pots in there too, which tend to brighten things too...

Anyway, thanks a lot!

Nico.

Honestly I would call wade and tell him your situation with your guitar and I'm sure he will know just what to do.

From the very little knowledge of pickups I know usually a slightly overwound pickup will roll off a little top end and give you a little extra low and mid range. Might want to ask someone to verify that though as I stated I'm no expert on this subject. Also wade makes the Black Iron which uses an alnico 2 magnet and has a very smooth but clear top end.

BTW the 2dbb are amazing it's a tie between those and the detroiters for me. Blackbelts are amazing too! The 2dbb are a little bright but not harsh at all in my prs custom 22.

How would you describe the differences between the 2dbb's and the Detroiter?

If you like a really good orig PAF What is the one to check out?!?

I would say the standard blackbelts are the most vintage correct paf type pickup. Although I don't think it is a paf clone it is in the same ballpark using same materials and similar output.

I have a set of 2nd dbb in a prs custom 22 and a detroiter set in a les paul. Not sure how much of the tone differences are coming from the different guitars but the detroiters seem to be thicker in the mids and darker and meaner more chunk. The 2dbb's are brighter and more open maybe with a little more lows more crunch. But like I said not sure how much of that is the different guitars.

Hey Beyond Black,
I know this is way late.... but I have had both the Detroiter and a 2nd Degree Black Belt in the bridge of my Les Paul. The Black Belt is a low output (8.75k'ish I thinkPAF type pickup a good amount of bass and treble, and a hair less mids but enough to give it some punch. This pickup is the cleanest slate I have ever worked with. It will handle all the gain you can throw at it and remain crystal clear with a super fat and tight low end. It is the perfect bridge pickup. The highs are perfect... very clear, very present, and crisp, but nothing abrasive or harsh about them. Insane clarity.
The Detroiter is a bit hotter, think hot-rodded PAF, and has a strong low mid thing. The lows straddle the low end/midrange frequencies so most of the super low end chunk you might be looking for will not be there(or will depend on the EQ of your amp). What you get is an extremely tight low end with a strong midrange presence, and an airy, more subtle high end than the BB while retaining amazing clarity. The Detroiter also has a lot of harmonic overtones going on. Note... my Detroiter was very lightly waxed which contributed to harmonic content.
I got the Detroiter first and then the 2nd Degree BB and like the BB better for what I play. I traded the Detroiter for an Afwayu and like it... super fat and clear, palm muting is wonderful... but the high end is nowhere to be found compare to the compared to BB. Hope that helps almost a month and a half later.
