Green, black, or NY?

Is it worth hunting down a Russian one, or just get a newer NY one and be done with it?

Getting into stoner lately.
 
Russian muff could be good, but they're either full into waxing and shaving, or full into deep foliage bush.

I'm not sure how tough you are, but man, if its green, I'd just steer clear of that bit of business entirely. Probably closely associated with the 'blue waffle'.
 
In all seriousness...

I ended up going with the Big Muff Pi, white box, green lettering. The 2 toggles on the box offer a spin off the original, or, the original circuit and sound. For my purposes, it works well. I know there are some hardcore fuzz aficionados out there all about the component spec, thermal breakup, etc. which I honestly know nothing about to speak with any authority. All I know is the one I have works well and sounds good.
 
If I was going to buy a new one by EH - The Wicker is the one I would buy. It has a very good smooth sound.

Agreed, the eh with tone wicker is the new muff to get it you go with eh. I first had a green muff, then a NYC reissue, and now have a musket. The musket is my favorite, followed closely by the green muff. Didn't care much for the NYC reissue, it was harsh compared to the green.
 
Get ready for some tone chasing my friend! :LOL: :LOL: I went Muff diving and came out with a not-so-special 2000's V8 Black Russian, but I found some gems along the way. The Sovtek Tall Font Green version is just insanely good. People say there's not a huge difference between all the versions and that may be true to some extent, but there's enough of a difference to justify the cost of the 90's green muffs for me. They just have that extra "something" that makes them great.

Also, my buddy has a mid 70s transitional Ram's Head with BC239 transistors and it's just super warm and awesome sounding. I will eventually own it. :D

I'd start by checking out that kitrae link that Stephen posted. lots of good info and gutshot pics there. You can check out ilovefuzz.com as well. Lots of Muff knowledge there. If you want something awesome and new, check out Arc Effects. The Arc Big Green Pi looks/sounds amazing. It's a tweaked version of the Tall Font:

It's not a muff, but I did a shootout between an NYC and a Russian Bass Balls and I could not tell the difference. I got all into turning the internal trip pots and everything. They are the same thing, more or less. I have the NYC on my board and the Russian one in my closet for space reasons only. If you're looking at the EHX, the Russian ones look cooler, but there isn't too much difference in them other than a few parts. Who knows, though? The Muffs could get different results because of the components used, where the BB pedals didn't.

I think the boutique route would be the way to go. Many have gone where EHX has been before. (Muff joke)
 
Like any gear, i'm sure i'll go down the rabbit hole, or fuzzy hole!

But i now atleast one of the tones i'm chasing is Russian Muff, just don't know if it was black or green.

So in some ways, scared that if i get too booteeky, they might have strayed too far away from the original in the name of making it better?
 
Muffs all sound a little different .... like snowflakes. They can look the same & sound very different. The clones all sound like variations of Big Muffs to me.

Like I posted at the top .... I really recommend checking out a Hoof Reaper to everyone.
 
Wow. I didn't realize the green version went up in value. I've had one of these sitting in my pedal box for years. Bought it back in the 90s when I wanted to sound like some nu-metal band that used it. :D

Well, the pedal didn't end up sounding anything like that band, but that's not a bad thing at all. :LOL: :LOL: Now I can appreciate its tone more.

Why did the green 90s ones go up in value so much? Besides it not being made anymore..? Very unique sounding pedal compared to anything else I have, but it's also surprising to see how much they are going for in recent ebay sales.
 
pi with tone wicker for me. enough tonal flexibility to match different tone stacks. on some darker voiced amps i found the original to be too muddy.
