who prefers which and why?

My brother has an axis and it's terrific but I've never laid my hands on a peavey….

I would suggest that you find a Wolfgang and try it out. Everybody's hands are different, but they felt different to me. Axis is 10" radius and Wolfgang was 15", I believe. Also, the neck profiles felt different, but that could just have been the fretboard radius. I don't think you can go wrong with either, and some people own both, but others swear by one or other. At least you know you love the Axis.

Yep. I'd also say smaller hands like mine prefer the Axis. PV Wolf neck is a bit bigger. To me it's very much a continuation of the EBMM if you will. Similar, but it grew a bit. Even thought the EBMM is a digitized exact copy of Ed's Kramer 5150 neck with wear marks and all. And the Peavey is asymmetrical. I see and feel a relation between the two. I prefer the tone of the EBMM. But the PV is a great high quality guitar. Now that I think about it the Wolfgang grew all around a bit. Body is slightly bigger too.

New Fender Wolf is a different story...

I have several of each and you can't go wrong with either one. It really comes down to personal preference. My tastes slightly favor the Wolfs, but it's close and I love the Axis' also!

Have both & both are great. As you can see in my profile pic I prefer my Peavey Wolfgangs overall though.

Peavey HP has the easiest playing neck of them all though!

The Axis has a flat top...Wolfgang (standard at least) has a contour. I loved the Axis' I've had, but in the end prefer the Wolfgang which I've kept for years and years. It seemed more comfortable to play.

hmmm sounds like I need to put my mitts on a peavey myself….

Are the Wolfgang Specials any good? The one's that were made in the USA? Is the only difference the non arch top?

Yes i owned the gold top one and it was a outstanding player and sounding guitar.
I got it with case for $600 used.

These are made in the USA and should not be confused with the XP specials wolfgangs that were asian made.
The XP wolfs all had faux binding and photo tops available in three finishes and the USA specials were available in gold, black, creme, sunburst, purple.

The neck joint on the arch top standard is slightly thinner than the specials. The standard has a dip/step down on the neck joint that the special doesn't have. It does make a difference & gives slightly better upper fret access.

I prefer the Wolfgang (both evh and peavey ) over the axis because the neck is flatter. I had an axis with a Floyd, and the small radius made the action on the outer strings way higher than those in the middle. Couldn't stand it. That and the axis felt cramped close to the nut. I love the neck on my evh stealth special. Flat compound radius, consistent action across the board. But remember that, while the peavey and evh both have a compound radius resulting in a flat neck, the peavey has an asymmetrical neck shape, so it's a little beefier than the evh.

the wolfgang I played had the smallest neck I have ever seen. Was so thin and narrow it was for me almost unplayable. It did sound fantastic but with a neck that small my hand would get sore quite quickly

The Axis' are top notch quality wise, just like the EBMM EVH before it, and EBMM has awesome customer service. A great company.

Something is up with that particular wolfe...cuz every USA one I've played neck was like a baseball bat, round and thick.

Access is pretty cool. Buddy of mine had a mint red one he scored for $800. It was cherry. He ended up trading it for some custom strat. But when I played it, I was underwhelmed. My peavey HP specials sounded way better to me.

Give the HP specials a try. Split coil, big ass brass trem blocks, smaller neck than the Wolfe, but not thin. My old MM Luke had a thin neck.

Fun fact : the ebmm evh was actually a guitar they were building for Albert Lee, but he didn't want it. Evh took the guitar but didn't come up with the body style, etc. That's why the Wolfgang are different animals

EVH didn't design the Wolfgang body either

I saw that episode as well. Trebek seemed to have plenty of guitar facts he slipped in during the show.
Here is the exact moment he talks of the Ebmm.

On the serious side.....I owned both as well.
I just could not get along with the neck on the EBMM EVH. It was too small and round(fat)
The Wolfgang just felt better to play. Both sounded really similar in my rig when doing an A/B.

That's not what your mother said, Trebek!
