I love mutt/parts guitars. LOVE'EM! I like them better than most $2-3K guitars I've played.

Now I'm not talking about those whacked-out wood/hardware/configuration choices that some people make. I'm talking about your run-of-the-mill alder/ash/basswood strat-type guitars. They RULE!!!

Seriously, this guitar is one of the lightest, most resonant, best playing, best sounding guitars I've ever had. I meant to add a pickguard. I was trying to do the burnt stained blue Jem finish.
Suhr Aldrich, Edge Trem, Wizard 22 Fret neck, RG 760 body.

You start the thread and you don't post pics?? :gethim: :gethim:

I feel the urge to put one together and I have some money burning a hole.

Something like this maybe:

The first two were built entirely from scratch. The vintage white is a wonderful sounding California Series that I turned into my Yngwie guitar with an Yngwie loaded pickguard off of ebay. All necks have 6000 frets. I may convert that California Series back to a traditional Strat because it sounds so damn good and bite the bullet for an Yngwie Signature and have it refinished in black because that was the coolest one he had.

pics?

my partsocaster is made of stuff that i picked up for the build or just had laying around and wanted to re-use rather than let them sit. the neck is from an '82 arbor strat.. the body is asian basswood.. the pickguard is an axl.. the bridge is a grover and the electronics came from a standard mim strat. i shielded the pickguard and cavity. sounds just fine. sorry i don't have pics 'cause i'd like to post them.
my next project is replacing the bridge on a series 10 h-h strat. i've got an accutronics kahler roller clone i'm putting in. got the maple block glued in where the strat style bridge used to be. i'm wating a couple more days for the glue to cure.. then i'm goning to route it for the kahler to fit. it really is a pos.. but but i'd rather make mistakes on something like that than try doing mods to my expensive guitars.
btw.. i've set a goal of being a bit more computer savvy this year.. so hopefully some pics will follow when i have a bit more time. i've been busy as hell the last six weeks or so.

Yup... I got all sorts of super strat parts laying around that I'm going to put into a Charvel Model 2 body that I bought for $89 and refinished myself. It's basswood. Don't know if it will sound good or not, but hey... it's cheap! LOL! :D Worth a shot.

i'm always thinking of putting together a project guitar

maybe and Ibanez rg 5xx body cause I love the edge trem, and have a custom musikraft 24 fret neck made for it.

or i've thought about just putting parts guitars together on the fly. basically find stuff that's cheap (in price) a go with it. for instance, not being picky about a bridge pickup - just keep an eye out for a good duncan or dimarzio for 40 bucks and throw that in there. and gotoh fr's can be had for like 120. so that's quality hardware and electronics for not much money right there.

a couple weeks ago I was thinking maybe i'd try my hand at finishing. buy a pack with several of these colors from alsa (you can get variety packs with small amounts of each) http://www.google.com/products?client=f ... a=N&tab=wf

and try my hand at swirling.

or even just solid color stuff. the alsa stuff looks pretty cool. they have some really nice looking bases http://www.google.com/products?q=alsa+base+pearls&hl=en

dig the cotton candy

oh, and I was watching this on ebay, I decided to pass though - didn't like the headstock
https://cgi.ebay.com/WarMoth-Custom-1992 ... 1|294%3A50

and is it just me or does that grain look kinda strange? http://i.ebayimg.com/24/!BN3OfBQ!mk~$(K ... lLmWUfiBJr)whd,sQ~~_12.JPG

Those are nice colors! Do they come in cans? Or you need a gun for it?

Ya, my main guitar for many years was a mahogany strat body, a Chandler Jackson style neck with a birdseye maple scallopped fingerboard, OFR, Hot Rails in the bridge, L250 in the neck and a SDS 1 in the middle. Great sounding and playing guitar.

I'm a huge fan of building my own mutts. Here are a few of my players:

Prepro Charvel parts and Dimarzio parts
DSC01303.jpg

Warmoth parts with Charvel and Schecter brass hardware...using this for a recording session this weekend. Feather light and an incredible sounding and playing instrument. I'm not a fan of relics but there is a cool story to this one. Briefly, it was used to smash out a large window in a music store during a robbery attempt. I salvaged the body and rebuilt it.
DSC01107.jpg

Formula Ford 1-piece maple body, Musikraft neck. Sounds great, heavier than I like so I don't play this one much.
DSC01340.jpg

Custom Jem style Ash body (I can't recall the maker) with an Ibanez PGM neck. Awesome player but a tad on the heavy side. I actually built this one for my son for his 15th birtday.
DSC00569.jpg

Warmoth parts. Everything about this one is awesome except in hindsight I should have gone with 22 frets. I like this neck too much to make the change though.

they sell em (the pearls and the hawaiian hues, and others i think) as additives you can use with a gun, or in spray cans. I think the cans are a bit more expensive.

i think that one above would be good for swirling. you can just get a bit of each of 8 colors of your choice (including black and white)

+1... actually, it's not a relic'd one, its a WEAPONIZED one!

My partso is the brownie in the avatar. Love the bastid. Rings like crazy! Not as well constructed as the Anderson next to it (duh! TA loses more guitar building knowledge during a left-cheek sneak than I'll ever have), but its a loud, rude mofo!
