By 'won't stay in tune', I don't mean while playing. It keeps in tune fine while playing.

But if I leave the guitar on the stand for a day, pick it up again, and the tuning will go flat. Noticeably flat. Sometimes it'll go sharp too.

What gives???

I stretch the hell outta the strings every restring. All my guitars have Floyd's and none of them behave this way.

Is the tremolo the cause or is it the guitar itself? I really need help. I have never encountered a guitar that does this before.

Humidity and temp here are very constant. All my other guitars have oil finished maple necks just like the Wolfgang. None of them have this issue.

Basswood is a soft wood, if its brand new it could be the wood just stretching ad getting "acclimated" to each other(i.e.. hard maple into a basswood neck pocket) I had the exact same problem with an ebmm axis. I returned it after a couple weeks with no change in the problem. EVH brand relies on its wood vendors to dry their wood so keep that in mind. Might just be the wood settling.

I've had the guitar for a year and some change now. I should think that there has been ample time for the wood to settle, no?

Check that the neck is screwed tight to the body

I thought that it would be the neck shifting but I made sure that the 4 screws were tight

Is there too much bend in the neck? Possible truss adjustment?

What about the tremolo -- is it flush/resting on the body? Did you change string gauges?

Neck has a very slight bow. Just the way I like it.

Trem is flush as it should be. I'm using the same gauge and tuning that came stock from the factory. 46-9 in Eb.

I'm really puzzled as to what in the hell could be causing the instability.

:dunno: I had an Ernie Ball Axis that, while I loved it, it always was doing stuff like this. In my case it was neck relief changing constantly...I was cranking on the truss rod all the time. I have never encountered anything like it since, and while I have never had another Axis I have two Peavey Wolfgangs that are perfectly stable.

When I whack the strings really hard, they go flat. Dive bomb the whammy and they return to being in tune. Is this normal?

floating trem w/o a block or Tremol-No type mechanism and any floating trem guitar will go flat when hitting strings hard unless you have 4-5 trem springs in cavity.
block the floyd to dive only. maybe that will help...maybe change strings and try full setup or get pro to do it.

next step - ebay

I would put new stings on and start over again. Also, tighten up the term springs just to make sure the trek stays flush. All that said every guitar will have fluctuations in tuning locking trem or not. My guitars will go out of tune in the course of a rehearsal several times as my hands warm up...

+1 on a hitch in the knife-edge.

I've had several OFR/Schaller/whatever trems act this way over the years.

Knife edges need attention and the trem claw needs adjustment. Had a wolfgang for 4 years and it was very stable in tuning - never had a problem even with the same gauge strings.

Also dont overtighten the nuts at the neck - finger tight is good enough. Make sure the truss rod has tension on the neck even with the amount of bow that you prefer.
