Traded an old non-properly working amp that I had listed on CL for $80 for a Galveston Seven string guitar. I had only previously played a few 7 stringers for a total of about 5 minutes in stores and it just felt weird. So I figured I'd play with it for a while. Put new strings on, set the Floyd and disconnected the tone pot( I just do this). Pretty nice guitar for being a "cheap" guitar. Much better quality all around than my other guitars.  So after playing it for a little while and getting the hang of it I picked up my regular guitar and it felt so FUCKING WEIRD. I just can't switch between the two. Anyways, I recorded a quickie clip. I'm done with 7's.

CLIP.

.

That clips sounds pummeling. I say keep on pummeling
I love moving from my 8 & 7 string back to the 6, makes the 6 seem easy to power

Nice! You will get used to it as time goes on. I regularly switch between 6s and 7s now without issue, it used to feel weird to me though.

Nice.

I play 6's and 7's also. I much prefer the 7's to detuning a 6 that far.

I actually have an easier time adjusting from bass to guitar than from the 7 string to 6 string. It is pretty cool playing with it. Sounds pretty thick and meaty too. I played an 8 string a few weeks ago for about 2 minutes and that was indeed weird. Maybe I'll keep it around and maybe I can "man up" a bit and get used to the change.  Also, I think one of the issues is that my 6 string guitars are drop tuned and the 7 is standard but I don't want to drop down to A.

Sometimes I think about an 8, but I am not sure I would like it for the long-term. I think they are fun to play in the store, but they definitely had a bad effect on my wrist. Beyond that I think they are fun, but I think I would get bored with it after a few weeks.

Yeah, I have had a ton of different 8s, mostly high end, and they all killed my wrist except the Strandberg.

Your clip sounds awesome!! I've never tried a 7 string, but would like to add one to the collection someday.

This.

It gets easier, Bubba...after playing 7s for a year I bought an 8 a month ago or so...after that, my LPs (even the big 50s ones) feel like baby necks and just get manhandled when it's time for them. You'll adjust faster than you think if you stick with it. Clip was brutality as always; pretty much what I figured I'd hear when you said you got a 7.

Thanks man. Yeah I'll keep playing with it for a little while. Or at least until it sells or trades away. I'll try to do another clip or two. I don't EVER see myself getting an 8. I could probably play most of my stuff with a 4 stringer.

i love that you do quality "budget" minded clips.

for guys like me that can't necessarily justify dropping 2k+ on a higher end, luxury guitar just to try...i appreciate that you convey tone and playing on a more accessible budget/mindset.

i've always been one to tinker with gear, and try to get results on my end (mods, pickups, speakers, etc) than just buying new shit cause it doesn't do what i want.

anyways, i always see a ton of Ibby 7 strings on CL for 500 and under.....i think it's time to give it a go!

I just can't do the 7 man.

I have owned a few, played one exclusively for maybe 2 years due to the band I was in and after I started playing my 6 again there is just no contest.

I am sorry, burn me at the stake but I just think 7 strings are stupid.

I have tuned to A with them, Drop A, Drop G, B, you name it. It is just not for me.

The 6 definitely felt like a little kids guitar after playing a 7 for a couple of years and I can only say I have never played a super nice high end 7. That could maybe change my outlook but idk man.

Hard to explain, the 6 is just better to me.

The way I see it is I tune pretty low on the 6 anyway. Drop C or Drop Bb.

You do not need a 7 to sound heavy, you can be completely crushing on a 6 string, even in higher tunings. It is all how you play them.

I am not much into djent at all and prefer having a Bass player covering the low end so I see no use in it.

Yes, you have more notes. That can be a good thing if utilized correctly but lets face it. Most guys play the 7 like it is a 6 anyway so what is the difference?

To each their own but that is my opinion on them. They can be cool and everything but if it is not you it is not you.

I have never even touched an 8 string or more and probably never will. I almost think that there is maybe something subliminal as well as far as why I do not like them. Everyone these days use them so I do not want to

Like you mentioned, I think its more about the additional range you get. Its cool being able to be in B standard without having to lose the high string. I just like them because I can play my favorite death metal songs and also learn my favorite solos without needing multiple guitars. Its like you have a 6 string tuned to B and a 6 string tuned to E in one guitar. :D

I agree, to me it is about the range. If you have a de-tuned 6 string the high strings sound all dull and muted from the huge strings. Chords and leads just sound bad.

With a 7 string you have have your low end notes while keeping your high end notes.

Yeah, that's the cool part for me. Having a standard tuned guitar with that bonus low B. I still prefer a 6, but i'll enjoy playing with this thing until it sells. Have it on CL for $90 and no bites.  Hell, any less than that and I might just give it to someone.

Hey I'm not hating. Lol

To each their own, I just trying to express how I feel about them. Didn't mean to offend or be a jerk.

But damn for $90 I'd probably keep it just to dick around every once in a while.

if I could get my hands on a B7 or a Skervesen or something that might change my "tune" Idk.

I've only played an Ibanez 7621. 7321 and an Agile 27"

the other part of me says i can barely manage playing a fucking 6 string as it is.

Seven string is gone now. Was fun while it lasted but I'm cool with 6's. Sold it for $90. I was actually pretty impressed with how well made it was. Gonna have a NAD and NGD really soon now. :D

Disagree on that one :)

Been playing detuned 6's for years....and reg 7's....nope....all good...

Same here. Disagree.

Obviously it is all a matter of taste and preference.

Not sure what strings you all are using but I use 12's or preferbly GHS DYL strings and they sound great. I tune to Drop C or Drop Bb and the chords are very clear and harmonic.

To be quite honest the same could be said about the reversed role. Especially if you do not have an extended scale 7 string.

Once you start tuning very low like most 7's do, you start losing harmonic content on a regular length scale. It is a scientific fact, some people can not hear it but I have compared a standard 7 string and a 27" 7 string and could definitely hear the difference.

This would go for both 6 strings and 7 strings obviously but worth mentioning.
