Reason? I am a forum dork who has way too much fun talking and obsessing over gear and tone.

same here.

Play along Juggy. Is your gear better than Darrell's on the Cowboys record? Is it better than what Exodus had on Bonded by Blood?

  absolutely, but just wish I had Darrel or Garys hands.......

Oh yeah...... the gear Michael Schenker used to record "Strangers in the Night"

and

the gear Jake used to record Bark at the Moon.

They say the difference between "knowledge and skill" is 1000 times, but at my age, I woulda thunk I would have gotten there by now...

then you see these young talented musicians, many of whom are younger than some of the guitar strings I currently have strung on my guitars!

I think the one thing we're missing of those guitar greats you mentioned and the new ones like Andy Wood, Pete Thorn and everyone else who share here, is their desire. Whatever it is that spurs them on, regardless of gear, is the the key.

My gear is about the same as many of my idols... well maybe except for the price of my Marsha.... which is not so outrageous. Most of my Charvels are old and fucked up modded things, my 4x12s are old Marshalls, and I have a couple of stompboxes. I usually use a SM57 which is the norm.

Now on the other hand I don't have killer mic pres and Neve or API boards nor an Eventide, or a cool producer like Ted Templeman!!

But I thought great tone was not in the fingers?! It was in my $3000 guitar + $3500 amp + $1200 cab....

Or if you prefer
Knowledge + (Skill * 1000) = Great tone with any gear.

I'm done buying gear...I'm very happy with what I've been using for years!

...and believe it or not, no one famous has used my gear (except for the Wolfgang guitar) and I don't care...I've got 'ADAM FROM CANADA'S TONE'

Trying to sell stuff excess stuff on the net is tough as it's a buyers market right now.

My gear is far better than what Jimi Hendrix used.

Enough said.

Come to think of it.. (And please correct me if I am wrong)... But Mozart would compose breathtaking music with nothing but a quilt and some paper.

Yes yes, I'm a 60 year old Gear Page snob who thinks Eric Johnson has no business playing Politician and I'd like to give Eric Johnson tone tips, and what gear he should be using.

So so true....

I'm in the same boat. Quite unfortunate when you really think about it.
