I dig it! Now if my elite per amp was used with an axe or Kemper I think it's nailed!

ok, i'm working on king's x tone using my axe-fx ultra and it sure isn't an easy tone to get dialed in. i ain't there yet, but i made a clip of my progress so i can refer back and see what works and what doesn't. excuse the rushed playing and sloppiness:

Sounds like the fundamentals are there ;)
I think it needs more gain if the AX can get it without squishing it to death

Very cool...one of my favorite all-time tones. I think you nailed the clean and lead sounds, but the dirty rhythm tones aren't quite there. They're good, but miss the mark of what I dig about TT's sound...they came off as a bit colder and more harsh sounding. Not in a bad way, just different. Then again, it could be a completely different experience in the room...clips are clips.

One of my best friends played a white (now yellow) Elite Strat (that he bought new in '83 and still has) live for many years. He hated the trem and the bridge pickup though so it ended up with a Kahler and a Duncan Distortion. Little did he know that it would be somewhat collectible some day. When did the market start to appreciate these things? You couldn't give one away as recently as the late 90's.

my presets are still a work in progress for sure....but i plan on getting there soon. Ty Tabor himself is using an axe-fx ultra and said he is getting the old tones from it, he just isn't sharing the presets. once i get the presets as close as i can, i will email him over at alien bean studios and see if i can get him to tweak on the presets a little. he charges for mastering cd's, so maybe i can get him to tweak my preset for a couple bucks.

my second stab at it using the axe-fx ultra plexi amp. no chorus, just double tracked this time.

Getting there !
Agreed
That thing would drive me insane
I'm glad your taking the time to push this, this is the one tone I've been wondering if it was even remotely capable of getting.
This must be the RT version of Hell's Kitchen
Stay in there man!

on the black flag clip, the only thing i did differently is roll off some highs and lows. listening to the faith, hope, love cd it sounds a little darker like the highs were subdued a bit compared to the gretchen clip. i think i'm close enough to call it a decent preset. no one has any opinions on what they are hearing on my clips that are different from the real cd.....except maybe my bad playing. if anyone is hearing anything tonally or effects wise that needs to change, let me know.

@singtall

I agree the fundamentals are there. but your rythym tone has a brittle top end to it. The Black Flag clip is closer. Remember, the Gretchen tone this is based around a totally solid state signal chain. Does the Axe-FX have any solid-state amp models instead of the Plexi? Your tone has more elements of Ear Candy to it using the Plexi. If you put a Mesa Dual Rectifier in there you'll be closer to Dogman.

The basic signal chain is: Alnico 5 single coil pickups>elite preamp>Lab L5,7,9,11 preamp>Midiverb II for chorus>Ibanez DL200 dual-delay (2 seperate adjustable short delays) for the delay>Crown MicroTech 600 Solid-State Power Amp>Peavey 4x12 with something like a Celestion V30 or a greenback.

I'm convinced that some of the tone we're after is coming from the proper speaker selection. If anyone knows exactly what TT was loading into his 4x12 please add it to the thread.

You'll probably want to add a noise gate after the delay to keep things quiet. All the preamp noise adds up when run through the chorus and delay.

he is using a peavey cabinet with g12k-85's, which have been replaced by the g12k-100's.....which don't sound quite the same, but they are close.

the biggest problem i'm having is dialing in the highs. most axe-fx starting points have so much high end that my ears get fried easily while i'm working the mids. by the time i tweak the highs, i'm no longer hearing correctly.

i don't think there are any solid state amps modeled in the axe. listening to clips of the L5 amp, it sounds more like a non-sparkly blackface fender while clean....and gets dirty from there. so far, the plexi 2 is the closest thing i could use, but i will experiment some more. with the axe-fx, you can quite literally turn any amp into something altogether different by tweaking the tone stack and caps, so i may venture out there more also.

The l5 is a very unique amp for sure! The mid sweep knob is very precise. It sounds Ike ass with most speakers other than the v30 or the gt12-75s. It's the pickups and the 12db mid boost in the elite pre amp!

You're right. The last thing I bought was the Peavey cab with the Celestion 85's in it. It made a big difference in the tone. Those Peavey cabs are around, I got mine for $300.

Resurrecting this thread...I have an Elite preamp board I want to mount in a pedal. Anyone have recommendations for this. Doesn't look that difficult. I just want to have a clear idea before I start. (the board is hard to come by)

thanks

I did not use the 3 switches that were used in the Elite, I used a regular 5 way switch.

Do you leave it in the Bridge/Middle position for the cleans, then switch to another for solos?

I have read that they are Alnico 5 magnet PUPs, no proof found anywhere. I do not know if they have 6 polepieces or a bar (like the Bill Lawrence or SD Hotrails PUPs). Elite PUPs are sealed, unless somebody gets a busted one and takes it apart we may never know.

Elite pickups have six magnetic polepieces, pretty sure. I was adjusting the pu height on mine once with a mini screwdriver and noticed that if I held it with a loose grip and slid the tip along the length of the pu it dipped in six evenly spaced 'hot spots'.
