You need to stop in and bring a 6 pack to share with Curt. He'll drink most of it but he's funny when drunk so it's worth it.

You, my friend, have never seen me drunk. A sentence which you cannot say back to me.

Thought I'd bump this as I was specifically searching for this thread to see what you used to record it and what the recording chain was like. Killer Killer Killer tone!!

I'm getting interested in recording lately. An api mic preamp. Hmmm will have to check them out. Any other recording tips you can share besides cranking a Peacemaker ;)

I did most of the work on this 3-5 years ago, so my memory will be a bit fuzzy. Everything was recorded through a 4x12 cab with Celestion G12H30's in it. I used a vintage Shure SM57 (alnico magnet) into a vintage API mic preamp. The amps were the Mojave Peacemaker and the Splawn Quick Rod. Most of it was the Peacemaker. My main guitars were my old '84 Charvel and an old Warmoth that I built as a replica of one of my favorite old Charvels. I also used a USA Charvel So Cal for all the electric guitar in the ballad tune. Pickups were Duncan '59's in the bridges. I have since changed favorites as far as bridge pickups and the Warmoth never gets picked up anymore.

In most cases the Peacemaker was boosted with a Tube Screamer or a v1 Fulltone OCD or a Boss SD-1.

That's really about all I can remember. This CD isn't on iTunes anymore. I paid for the second year and it expired and sales were really slow so it wasn't worth putting up for another year.

Thanks for the info. I thought earlier in the thread it was a Duncan Custom in the bridge of the '84 Charvel? No biggie. The G12H30's have been a big eye opener for me, great speaker. Close enough to a GB which I love with more bottom. I Like bottom's...ahhhh where's the Don

So now I gotta go looking for vintage mics  Seriously, are they better? Total noob at recording here. Well at least I've got a vintage MIJ SD-1

I can tell, I'm going to start gassing for a peacemaker big time. No intention of slamming modeling tools as I do use them, but I have yet to hear an Snax fx clip or a Kemper sound as good as what you've recorded, so that's why the interest. Great job in the recording.

you know i have been passing squid music for years on beach blvd and never once gone in. i always assumed it was a crappy pawn shop.

People tell me all the time that they have been driving by for years and never stop in and it amazes me. I can't drive past a music store without stopping in and finding out what they are all about. The sign says GUITARS on one side in 4' letters. The front sign says Squid Music - New & Used Musical Instruments and the other side sign says Squid Music. No hint of "pawn" on the sign anywhere. This is not a new building or a glamorous fashion boutique. It is an old school style guitar, bass, drum shop that gets in a lot of used musical gear. Remember that excitement of walking into a guitar shop or cool pawn shop and not knowing what was going to be in there this time and just hoping to come across something cool? I do. That's why I do this.
I don't live in LA, so I've only been in a couple of times...regardless, EASILY
one of my favorite music stores in the county. THE store for Rig Talkers, for sure!

LOL, it may have been a Duncan Custom in the bridge. I don't remember it that well. That guitar has had a Duncan '78, a Duncan Custom, a Duncan Custom 5, a Jackson J-80, a High Order "Chubtone Secret Sauce, and now has an old DiMarzio Super Distortion in it since I finished the recording. For most of the time I was recording the CD, the Duncan '59 was my go to bridge pickup. Since then it has become the Arcane Brownbucker. I'll bet I have had 30 different pickups in that guitar over the years. It is my test bed guitar. It normally sounds great if it has a great pickup in it. Brand new from Charvel it had a Duncan '59 in it and of course that was too wimpy for the 1984 Chubtone and it immediately got a Duncan Invader and then shortly after that a DiMarzio X2N.

I don't think there is any necessity to grab a vintage SM57. I read an Eric Johnson interview where he was going on about SM57 that were vintage and had an alnico magnet in them. While reading it, I looked in the cabinet here and I had 2 or 3 from the era he was talking about. I think they say Unidyne 3 up near the top of them. So I grabbed them and took them home. I don't honestly think they are any better than a newer one.

And regarding the Peacemaker and people in this thread digging my tone on this CD. I don't know if at any point while recording this I thought to myself that my tone was just perfect. I used slightly different approaches on every song, not to be different but because I was always looking for the perfect tone and never found it. To be honest, I haven't listened to the CD in forever. Maybe I should. Maybe I did actually pull down a cool tone and I can go back in time and try and chase my old tone

Thanks Bronco. I appreciate the comment. I don't want to step on any toes here though. My shop is quite different than others here that are filled with the best of the best. I have a lot of middle range stuff because that is what the local and new buyer seem to gravitate to more. I have some cool pieces, but they are diamonds in the rough, and there is a lot of rough. :D

I was just looking for this disc the other day. It turns out my brother took it and hadn't returned it.  I'm hoping to listen again this weekend.

It is a great disc!!! I picked it up from Curt earlier this year and actually have a copy in my car!!!
