I finished this amp a couple of weeks ago. I built it for my own personal pleasure and was really surprised how well it sounds. I even had chubtone give it a whirl today to make sure I was hearing and feeling what I think is the best sounding Marshall clone I have ever built. (not THE best sounding, but the best I have ever built) ;)

I am hoping he will have time to come off of his golden throne of tone and comment a little....

Anyway, here is my little green monster:

I wish I could have gotten more time with this amp today. Customers kept coming in while Carl was there and I only got a few short blasts with it before he had to leave. One thing I kept thinking was how much more ballsy and punchy it sounded than my JCM800. It had a thick whomp to the lows that really impressed me. And it also wasn't too tight, which I was afraid it would be with the KT-88's. But Carl explained why it still had some of that spongyness that I love with EL34's.

And it really had that great, early AC/DC type raw RAWK sound to it. When I goosed the gain up a little bit, it got much meaner than where Carl has it here in this clip. My guess is that he has the gain around 12 o'clock and at 2-3o'clock it gets way meaner than my JCM800 ever could.

I hope to spend some more time with this amp in the future. Carl offered to loan it to me but I have a busy weekend ahead and it wouldn't have done me any good to have the amp.

Thanks for bringing it by!

Sounds really great!

You can't beat the grind of a Marshall! Jolly good job.

Sounds excellent...but then all your clips do.

Congrats on the build, she's a keeper...wish I had that skill.

Man that thing sounds like a REALLY good 800! I don't tghink mines that crunchy at those settings, or has that sweet of a high end.. did you buy a kit?
Oh and dibs!

No it wasn't a kit, it was a mish-mosh of parts that I thought would work well together. The headcab and chassis are Trainwreck Express clone parts. The Power transformer was a HiFi Dynaco clone, the OT was an Edcor (I used their OT's for Dumble Clones, Fender Clones, Vox Clones). I knew I didn't want a 50 watt version because they tend to hit the wall early and mush out, but I knew I couldn't fit 4-EL34's in there, so a pair of KT88's running at higher voltage was the perfect option for me. It is a 70 watt amp. The turret board is for a Hiwatt from turretboards.com. Caps are F&T, Sozo, and Solen. I hate the noise from carbon comp. resistors, so I used metal film wherever possible. I love the simplicity of the amp and the fact that you can still use a delay, phaser, flanger in front and it won't mush out. But, I built it as a pure tone machine for myself. I have other amps with great effects loops already...

These are the very minor mods I did to it:

V1b Cathode resistor was 10k, now 5.6k
1st treble peak was 470k/470pf, is now 470k/500pf
2nd treble Peak was 470k/470pf, is now 340k/500pf
Brightcap was 1000pf, is now 750pf

:2thumbsup:

I changed the knobs and added a nameplate. I didn't feel comfortable putting a full on Marshall nameplate because it isn't, but I did cut the Marshall nameplate...
