I picked up this Gibson Star acoustic yesterday. I bought it with a broken headstock. It was a good clean break. An easy fix.

The rest of the guitar is is in good shape. There is some checking on the top and very light fret wear.

It’s a spruce top with curly maple back and rim. Mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard.

I’m gonna take the clamps off this evening and string it up.

Nice guitar. Gibson acoustics are usually my favorite flat tops. That really was a clean break. Easy fix and the IME the guitar usually sounds better after the fix than it did before it so I hope it sounds good after you strang it. Please report your experiences after playing and thank you for sharing Brent.

Thanks bro!!

Well…

I absolutely hate stringing up a guitar after doing a headstock repair!!! (Is it gonna hold???) going through your head!!!

Good news is that it held!!

Strung it up up with Medium 12-56 Ernie Ball 80/20s

There were some high frets that I dressed down.

It plays great!! It has a very warm tone. Crisp highs. Great bottom end. The action is pretty good. I’d like to see it a little lower (just for soloing) but it’s not bad.

Overall….a great acoustic!! For a great, bottom feeder friendly price, with a little bit elbow grease….a great piece!!

Are those Earthwood Ernie Balls? Those have long been my favorite for most acoustics.

You did a nice job on the fix. I call a clean break fix "moron work" because it doesn't take a lot of skill to do a decent job. I chastised a dude about overcharging for an easy repair and was told to stick it up my ass recently, lolf. I can see a luthier trying to get $150-200 for a repair like that which is a ripoff IMO since they are so easy and a couple clamps and some glue is all that is needed. Your repair looks outstanding.

I gotta ask though....how much were you able to land that puppy for?

Yeahhhhhhh….Earthwoods
Those are pretty easy repairs.

Lovely! I used to have one of these a long time ago, but I feel like it had clusters of stars as inlays instead of the standard layout.
Glad to see you got it back in action, Brent! ❤️

I knew I had seen the Gibson star guitar somewhere in my past, and it was on a promotional poster that I had hanging up in my basement. It was a Van Halen poster promoting the “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” album!

I had taken the poster down when my basement flooded in 2018 and I had stowed away in a box rolled up with dozens of other posters that I had saved over the years.

Dude…I was looking at Japanese clones of those yesterday. Hilarious. I normally dislike gibsons for strumming but find they are better for picking. Ymmv…
