Man, I never knew the pressure you guys take. I'm glad I'm only a hobby player and I can't remember more than 12 songs now. I'm getting old duh.

Good read though Pete.

I use sheet music for piano songs and tabs for guitar... As well as listening a lot to the stuff... Learning ALL by ear is time consuming...

When I auditioned for Chris Cornell- I got an email at 11:30pm saying "be at this location at noon tomorrow and know these 5 songs if you want to audition". I was in a session, recording til 1:30 am- got home around 2- learned 2 songs and programmed sounds- slept for a few hours til 8 or so, got up and learned 2 more, and went over the first two, and said "screw it" on the 5th tune, and just sort of half assed learned it. Best I could do on 12 hours notice. Packed up and went and rocked as best I could- It all worked out ! :)

Now thats Rock and Roll.

Sounds like my bar band audtion except I had an ace up my sleeve, I had the moving truck and the PA.
i like brads' answer.

Nice read, well done. Maybe transcribing the music is easier these days, but why don't they give you the tabs of the songs you have to learn? I would expect that the artists you mentioned in the article (who are on a very high professional level) whould have mapped everything out.

I would guess that is somewhat of an audition within the audition as well. If you're not up to learning those songs by ear, you're not good enough to play with them. And in addition; what if whoever you're playing with wants to add something new during the tour? Learning new material fast seems to be important.

Great read, you'll be an excellent addition to this mag - and a mondo help to those who play to live and live to play...

Mo

Yes this is all true.

We learn new songs on tour all the time.

I remember Cornell throwing a bunch of new tunes at us, most from Euphoria Morning, and those songs are really quite complex. We were playing a theatre in ventura- we soundchecked like 9 of them, I felt like we barely had them together- after check I said sorry they weren't more together, he said don't worry about it, all good. Then I got the setlidt for the gig that night- all the new tunes, one after another, right from the top of the set, hahahaa I'm sure he did half just to mess with me. That's how he rolls though, he likes to live on the edge.

funny story. I heard Ritchie Blackmore used to pull the same tactics in Rainbow era, but he would also call out a completely different tempo ( usually way faster) that wasnt even close to what they had rehearse to mess with the.. typical RB. Euphoria's music and guitar parts are brilliant IMO. songwriting is up there with Lennon/MCartney... that's my favorite Cornell CD of all time.
