A friend and I have spent the past year or so on the hunt for and ENGL Straight. We're both big fans of 80's power metal and this was the amp used on a fuckton of those old records. A month or so ago one came up on the ol' Reverb and he snatched it up immediately. This past weekend he was so kind as to drop it off to let me fuck around with it for a month or two. He said if I dig it, I can buy it off of him, which I probably will, because this thing smokes. It's hard to describe the tone, but it kicks ass. Very, very good for more traditional forms of metal. Throw a boost on and you're in modern high-gain territory.

And I know what you motherfuckers really want is clips of it, so here you go:

(sorry for the overprocessing, I was using this as an opportunity to test out some new plugins as well)

Here's just the guitars for you purists. 100% unprocessed, I'm pretty sure:

Sound pretty rad. Lots of clank. I'm a bit new to the amp world compared to some of you but I've never heard of this amp. When I saw power metal I guess I assumed it was a solid state amp at first. So all dem switches across the top are switched on? What is the tube set up?

Congrats man

I remember when George Lynch’s Engl was being sold. He used it on the one instruction video for a few tunes. I like Engls a lot.
Never had a chance to play this model.

It's a fairly obscure amp, so no worries. It was ENGLs first amp, and they discontinued it before ENGL became well-known in America. They're really common and cheap in Germany, but pretty rare here. All the switches are on except for the bypass, which turns the EQ off. The bright and mid shift switches are fairly subtle but add another layer of aggression to it. It's a fairly typical tube setup, 12AX7s in the pre and EL34s in the power section.

Yes dude that's awesome! A buddy of mine has one and I first heard about them from Lasse's vids. Tone sounds killer!

These kick ass, Lasse Lammert has a couple good videos about these.

Killer amp!
GLynchs was in a local store to me, I had cash, loved it, but somehow decided not to?! Big regret
That amp was hauntingly awesome

Nice score!
As I understood, also a lot of late 80's thrash in Germany was recorded on these.
Love/hate the 'sci-fi' font.

And while even more 'clanky' than my Savage 60, I hear the family traits. I assume that the Straight's channels are fully separated?
With the Savage 60 (and 120MKI) the gain of the 'rhythm' channel influences the gain of the lead channel as well, making it quite versatile.
From jazzy cleans, JTM45-ish breakup, via Plexi goodness to balls out metal.

I'd have to double check, but I'm pretty sure they are, yeah. With the gains as they are the clean is pretty clean and the lead channel is in 80s high-gain territory.

I had a Savage 60 a few years back and TBH I only noticed that right before I sold it. :aww: I always wondered why my level of gain was fluctuating wildly. Turns out I'm just stupid.

The new engl amps are totally different than the ones from 89-92.

Damn, that sounds killer. Great clip and playing as well. Can really hear your pick attack. Heavy AF.

Has a built in 33?
That's Engl's pre-filtering for ya.

Heck, you don't have to pay $6k to another German to get a tight sounding metal monster.
My Savage 60 cost me 1/10th of that.

In fairness, it's boosted with the TS9 in the clip. So that's not just the amp. But it's otherwise totally untouched.
