So my friend in the brown truck brought me a 1970 Marshall Superlead. Built in January of '70, just like me.
I'm in much better shape though, this poor guy is beat to shit! The tolex is pretty ragged in spots, it's missing a knob, one of the center caps is gone from another knob, Marshall logo is missing, all three of the switches on the face (polarity, standby, on/off) are different, and there's an extra hole in the back where some idiot did a mod - instead of just taking one of the FOUR speaker outs and using that hole... idiot! Plus the amp was shipped to me without a fuse in the 4a slot, so it was DOA. I figured it out fast, but it scared the crap out of me. He's getting an email from me tomorrow...
Having said that - the amp sounds great - it has stock internals (or so the seller says, I need to check it) and stock transformers. I hooked it up to my hotplate, and then to one of my '72 stock cabs. Also jumpered the channels... it drips classic marshall tone like a greasy backyard burger. I'll have to record some clips of it vs my '72 SL 100 and my '74 SL 50.
I don't know why, but I'm a lot hipper on amps that are beat up looking than guitars. Doesn't really make any sense, I just how a beat up Marshall looks. I'll probably get a repro logo for it, and knobs... and replace the switches for correct ones. But all in all it's a pretty neat amp with lots of mojo.
