Well, I received the OD100 Classic Plus today and this amp sounds freaking HUGE! I like it!

Anyway, if you're not familiar with this amp, it has four EL34's in the power section, six 12ax7's in the preamp and is 100 watts. It has a Plexi-spec Heyboer Output Transformer. There are two channels, with one being clean and the other being dirty. Both channels have gain boosts, yet only the dirt channel's boost is footswitchable. There are bright switches for both the clean and dirty channels. The back panel has a Feedback control and a Density control.

The clean channel sounds really great. It's kind of as advertised in regard to the Custom Audio amps. I can get some nice bounce and chime from it. I can also get it to overdrive if I turn up the gain or hit the boost switch.

The dirty channel sounds like an extremely thick old Marshall. The gain ranges from a good AC/DC type of crunch all the way up to fairly heavy hard rock tone in the realm of Tool. It definitely has more gain than a stock JCM 800. The boost function just kicks up the aggression and adds just a touch more gain, but it isn't a whole lot extra. The main thing the boost function does is add some of the syrupy Plexi fat bottom end. I call it a rubber band type of feel.

As far as the voicing of the dirty channel... Well, you can make it sound just about however you want it to sound. You can dial the Bass back, add some Density and boost the Mids and Treble and you have a tone kind of like the early EVH stuff. You can add more lows and even things out. You can bump the treble and bass down and have more of a mid-heavy tone. Each time I messed with the controls, I was fiddling with the Feedback and Density controls. There are an absolute ton of tones in this amp. I've just got to mess around with it a bit more.

I was kind of hesitant about purchasing this amp because I didn't know how much gain it would have on tap. Well, I'm glad I did purchase it because there is plenty on tap. There is more than I will ever use. My extremely high gain cravings can be met at about 7 on the gain knob of the dirty channel with the boost engaged.

I'm glad I purchased this amp. It fills the void of my old JMP 2203, yet I have a clean channel and a dirty channel that is capable of more gain. I'm happy! If you get a chance to try one of these out, do it. You just might like it! Maybe I will get some clips up here someday. :(

Well, I hope you guys enjoyed this little initial review. I'm going to play the amp a bit more, but I know it's one that is going to be hard for me to get rid of. :)

Oh yeah... If the above appears like I'm rattling, I'm kind of jacked up right now. My wisdom teeth are bothering me and I'm coming down off of some pain meds I was taking over the weekend for it. :aww:

Man, that amp gets some bad reviews here and there. But yet everytime I hear Landau through his...well....game over...

Yeah, I can definitely see where some people may not like it. It's not for everyone, but it's definitely for me!

I've heard questionable reviews too, but EVERY time I've heard one live, it's killed!

Congratz Dale. Looks like you got yourself the CAA. Glad you like it. I like mine alot but it didn't make sense owning it and the XTC at the same time.

Sweet amp!

Not to hijack your thread, but I really want to get a Peter Thorn model (PT-100), which Suhr custom voiced for Peter. It's based off the CAA Standard+ model, but tweaked to Peter's recommendations (similarly to M.Landau, S.Henderson, and S.Stevens). The clean channel is the new Landau clean, which can get some fantastic Fender mild break-up sounds. Channel two is a Marshall on 'roids and voiced to Pete's personal request. It has the adjustable trim pot in it too (just like a Standard+).

Check out Pete's demo clips of both the clean (clip2) and channel 2 dirty (clip1):

Congrats, I have th SE+ and this thing just kicks at loud volumes. I like the low volume sounds aswell, but when I first opened it up, wow!

Yeah, I didn't wind up going with the SE+. The Classic Plus was more of what I was shooting for. It isn't quite as gained out as the 101B's Red channel, but it's up there in the neighborhood of the older 101B's Red. :) I can pull off some good Hard Rock with it. If I scooped the mids, I could probably get TEH BRUTALZ, but I'm not after that. :)

I just gave mine a bit of juice and it came alive. I like how the knobs on the back allow you to tweak everything. Mine has the Feedback and Density. I just dialed in an older Marshall tone with the Feedback turned all the way down. It was nice and juicy! :)

Yeah, Pete's amp sounds pretty cool. I saw that the other day when he posted that clip. He's a really great player and an extremely nice guy.

The classic plus interests me but the clips on Suhrs site played by Landau sound like fuzzy crap to me. Like a bad, mid 70's non master marshall.

Yeah...I heard SteveVHT's and didn't like the dirty channel at all. On the other hand, the clean channel was to die for. It sounded 100x better with a Tube Zone boosting the clean channel then the dirty channel did by itself

Guys like Landau and Govin could plug into a microwave sound great IMO

Those clips don't sound all that great to me either.

The reason why you are hearing mixed reviews is because there are multiple mods done on some of the amps and most of the guys whose tones have been mentioned are boosting the amp with some sort of pedal.
Reb is boosting his Od-100 with a boost pedal and So is landau and Henderson.

I have played a bunch of different OD100s and some of them sounded like total crap. The clean channel in general is good or really great but the OD-channels differ so much. Earlier this year I played an early OD100, not Bradshaw but build like those, and it BLEW me away on the gain channel. A friend of mine is somewhat of an OD100/3+SE doctor and has had a shitload through his hands and he says that Suhr made a lot of changes throughout the years and some of those amps were really shitty sounding. However, he has nothing but compliments for the Classics.

I´m dying to hear a Classic although I´m afraid it would be VERY bad for my GAS.

If you get a chance to play the Classic or Classic Plus, do it. You may like it. It's more of a vintage Marshall voicing, but it can definitely get up there in the gain department.

Sup Bro!!

I agree with you 100% but you are one up on me because I have not yet heard one in person that sounded good on the Overdrive Channel.
