I've been after a VH4 for a couple of years now. Every time they show up at a decent price, I'm either not ready to buy, or they sell before I can get to them.

Well, a friend of mine just so happen to post his up for sale at a price I was willing to pay, so I jumped on it.

Showed up today, super clean! I got home and hooked it up to my Mesa OS 412 and plugged in a Les Paul Studio faded with Bareknuckle Miracle Man in the bridge.

Channel 3 - First Impressions: Amp is very middy, it really caught me off guard. It's more of a broad mid than a spike in the low or high mid portion of the voicing. I for once had to dial my mids back to get a sound I was happy with. The amp is also not as tight as I was thinking it would be. Doesn't react quite as immediately as I have read, not quite like a VHT or Splawn, and the lows are punchy but not in a crazy way, a little more round, reminds me of the lows on the Herbert (go figure)

The gain can get pretty saturated, but has a crunch to it vs a smooth saturation like the Herbert or a 5150, etc. I like the character of it, but it takes a little getting used to. The highs can get harsh pretty quick, so I'm figuring out how to balance the high and presence dials to work best for me.

Overall, I like it, but will need to spend some more time with it, for sure. The power tubes are currently just EHX EL34's. I'm thinking 6L6 in this amp might be more my speed? Worth a shot. No idea what's in the preamp yet, so I'll have to dissect it after work tonight.

Here's some porn and a clip recorded with an SM57, sloppily thrown on the mesa v30.

Congrats on the new amp. I just listened to your VH4 and Blue Voodoo clips back to back. I have to say I think the Blue Voodoo sounds better! Never understood the hype of the VH4's at all. Love the Einstein though.

Congrats! Cool amps and a staple for the modern tone guys. Not my thing but I have played one and they are unique for sure. Great clarity and punch.

Congrats! always preferred the Herbert ( just grabbed a white one that is insane ) but the VH4 is an amazing amp!

Day 2, Someone forwarded a post from Nolly about the VH4, and he mentioned to turn the presence and deep settings completely off, as it just made the amp really hard to control and dial in.

I did this, and also put the amp through the Crate BV412 cabe with v30's, which is a little stiffer than the Mesa OS, and I'm liking it MUCH better now.

Here's another quick riff video, mic'd with an SM%7. Much happier with this take.

Congrats on the Diezel !
They are addictive.
I’ve had a VH4 for 19 years.
I got a Herbert a few years back thinking I’d keep one of them.
Didn’t work out.

I dig JJ 6L6 In my VH4 a close second is GL KT77.

It’s Throaty ,more of a traditional Marshall voicing with Peters tweeks vs Herbert ,
Herbert is a softer roar, with an evil smear, less clear.
VH4 cuts very well in a band, that’s where you start to appreciate the presence control.
For me Herbert is the best Amp - but VH4 is Even better.
VH4 would be the only amp left
If I could just have one.

Awesome
VH4S for the win.
Had 2 of them. Probably my all time favorite amp.
