Picked up a Marshall 2061x clone...plugged it up and after about 5 seconds, the mains fuse blew. I know HT fuses commonly follow bad power tubes. But what about the mains fuse? The same? The HT fuse did not blow.

Sounded great for those 5 seconds lol...

Assuming your fuse values are correct chances are you need a cap job.

Sometimes the output tubes will take out the mains fuse. Try pulling out the power tubes and then replace the mains fuse. Fire it up, take it off of standby, then power down. Make sure the amp is not plugged into the wall AC, pull out the mains fuse to see if it blew. If the fuse is in tact, then its most likely your power tubes. This is assuming that there isn't an assembly / wiring issue, etc.
I have Marshall schematics for the 2061x, if you need them, I'd be happy to send them to you. Also make sure that the HT fuse and the Mains fuse is a slo blo type which will have the letter "T" in front of the rating number. Just send me a PM if you need the schematic.
Cheers,
Mike

Oh damn Mike. That is f$%^!d up

Yeah, ain't that a bitch? lol...

Not too stressed about it. It's about as simple as an amp can be so I'm sure it can be fixed and probably fairly easily.

Thanks for the input guys. Need to find some replacement fuses and I'll try again. I think I have a spare pair of el84's I can try too..

Hey Mike,

Thanks for chiming in on my thread. The rear panel of the amp lists the mains fuse as a 1500mA slow blow type. The fuse in there is 1500mA, 125V. I've noticed that all the other fuses around me are 250V. Should it be 250? Could that be the problem?

Thanks again for your help.

-Mike

Go ahead and use the 250v rating fuses. The 125v rating isn't the cause for it blowing. If you can't find them locally, you can get them from http://www.digikey.com
If you end up getting some from digikey, it might be a good idea to go through your other amps and stock up on some fuses. Digikey has a minimum order but it's not much. They're fast too, 1 business day. If you need some help with getting the correct part numbers, let me know.

Cheers,
Mike

I jsut had an amp on loan that did the same thing and they snet it back to the builder and it was a diode in the rectifire. So it could be anything really. I take it to a tech.

Still sounds like a cool amp once you get her runnin'... any pics or even better, gut pics? ;)

Well I think I solved the riddle. Went to pop the chassis and take a peek inside and the top of one of the 84's came off in my hand.

My own dumbass fault for not taking a good look at the tubes before powering up.

I had been eyeing up the kit that this one was built from for quite some time. The kiit is $700 but I came across this one assembled for $500. Not totally pro, but so far as I can tell, pretty decent. 'Cept for that damn tube.

Sorry...I hit the wrong button and PM'ed your quote...

It's a kit that Soultone sells. So far as I know the 2061x is the only model...

Wow, kinda uncool if they are selling kits that are that 'Marshall' like. Jeez.

I have and have built a few Webers, and say what you will about Weber kits, he doesn't go that far.

Hey Mike, a fun mod for these is what I did to my 18 watt kit - I gained up one channel, and it is pretty cool, and then I gained DOWN the other one, and made it chimier/more voxy. These amps are so simple they are pretty easy to modify. Looks like they did a decent job building it too, I bet it sounds great.

I spent the last 3 days bitching about Ceriaone selling a Matchless DC30 as a Muchle$$, but this shit takes the cake...

Well, it gets even more ironic than that. Before this kit came out, the owner of Soultone was bitching on TGP about how Marshall had just released the Vintage Modern which was a marketing phrase that he used on his website.

Just goes to show you. I'm not going to try and play any ethics games when it comes to gear, especially amps. The line between borrower, cloner, thief, and inspiration is blurred to the point of being gone. So I'll just buy the best tone I can afford at any given time and let the rest of them sort it out. I bought it knowing full well it was a clone/kit, and if I ever sell it, I'll sell it the same way.

I hve no issue with guys buying whatever...but boy do I have an issue with builders like this.

Ed just posted on Gearpage a capture from the kit company's website - they have the balls to sell marshall logos with the kits. *!*

Mike, I didn't mention that to say anything about you or your ethics, just the kit company. Besides, once an amp is used, the original builder doesn't make any $ off of it. :)
