Oh
My
God.

What an incredible amp. A Langner is one of only a couple modded Marshalls left for me to try. Ted (@Exo-metal) knew Todd personally, and owns a 71 SL modded by Todd, and a DCP-1 preamp...a while back he mentioned his 71 needed servicing, and I suggested he talk with Mike(46-2) about it...Mike was able to get his 71 sounding just like it did years ago! Upon hearing that, I decided to try and find another Superlead to send to Mike for his version of a Langner mod. I ended up finding a 68 SuperTrem, and that meant my 72 was on deck for this mod. The 68 sounds a bit more '3D' than my 72....off went the 72.

Well, after getting it yesterday I'm Fn blown away. I know we all get the 'honeymoon' stage on new gear, but for me I can confidently say this is THE best modded Marshall I've owned. Prior, the Camerons/Nick's "mutant' Aldrich mods were in a tie for first. Not anymore. This thing, with 5 gain stages is one of the quietest amps I've ever played period. Mike added an adjustable Depth mod, Punch control(basically adjusts the NFB) and a mid/slope knob with 3 different values...33k(stock Marshall) and a 39, 47...gets more scooped with each increase. Sooo versatile. And, what's even more awesome is, even with all the gain this has, I can clean it up for a nice dirty clean with the guitar vol. I love a Marshall midrange. This amp stock has those killer mids...but, after the mod they're even better. A grind that wasn't there before. Just awesome. Maybe the best thing is the Feel....right up there with the Snorkler, Naylor and other vintage amps. Super easy feel and fast response.

The one thing most important to me is, does the mod retain the 'vintage'-ness of the amp? Some recent modded Marshalls sound a little too modern to me...like all the Mustards were pulled out and replaced with more 'sterile' sounding circuit parts. That's not a sound I care for. This mod is all pissed off angry 1972 Marshall SL. The gain is equal to a double boosted SL....just drips with it.

We are lucky in that there are really some killer options for mods.....Jeremy (GZ), Shea(Monomyth), Hermansson, Hopkins, and now Mike(46-2). If you've always wanted to try a Langner, look no further and source a good old Superlead/SuperTrem; or a nice JCM 800 would work I'm sure.

Fuck yeah Tom, congrats!!! Sounds sooo good. And yes, we are so fortunate to have all these incredible options. Jeremy (GZ Ampworks) are my favorite amps I've owned.

Congrats! :2thumbsup: The Langner stuff has always intrigued me...........Your amp sounded really mean in the clips that were posted!!!!!!!!

HAPPY NEW OLD AMP DAY!

I think you should mod the headshell with say, My Little Pony stickers or something to really piss off the collectors

Dude... I'm posting progress on another build over on the Marshall Forum in the workbench section and people there are absolutely furious haha. They're like "this is horrifying" and "you're depriving other people of having vintage Marshalls because you're modding them". Bunch of idiots... never mind the fact that sub-forum is specifically for mods.

If Marshall wasn’t the king of making amps that almost sound good, people wouldn’t mod them.

Considering most of them would never actually buy one if they found it anyway. Too expensive and doesn’t have a loop and “features” 😂
