I caught this earlier today, I like your clips, they sound honest. My first thought was that this amp sounded like a Cameron aldrich mod.

Thanks man. Your amp mods sound absolutely killer. I have a really simple recording setup. SM57 pointing a little to the side of the dust cap (Peavey Sheffield 1200 speaker) and about 1 1/2" off the grill. That goes straight into an iRig Pre HD and that plugs straight into my iPhone. No eq, filters or any tonal shenanigans. I think it's pretty honest........ cheap and easy too.

The KT77’s sound really good in this amp, but I just installed a pair of JJ EL34L’s and I like them even more. Still plenty of girth and even more grind.

I agree... killer clip... the amp has a nice tight lowend and a very intense bright crunch, very similar to an Aldrich. The Splawn topology is similar to an aldrich as to how they add the extra gain stages.

Are you using your PLX Bion Boost here? Your Splawn sounds like a 100 watter, it hits that hard in your clip... very impressive for a 50 watter for sure.

Congrats

Sounds great. I've been debating KT77s vs EL34L lately. My QR started off with the same plexi look. In hindsight, I never use the clean channel. I mean, its nice to have and you can get some light crunch on it too but you prove right here what the guitar's volume control can do.

Have fun!

I think the Competition has more beef without a clean channel. Simpler circuit = more tone.

Lord, now I want a Splawn lol. Killer sounding clip and agree with Monomyth...your clips are fantastic. The VTM clip like this was is just badass.

Oh for sure. That's true with most amps I think. There is some slight channel bleed over too (at least on my Splawn). Therefore, I run the clean channel controls all the way up (when not in use) :D

And OD channel Treble = 0

This is what You guys consider like a good sound ? I hear thin, scratchy, overly agressive and very dry sound. Don’t want to piss over someones parade but I just curious why is everybody say “sounds killer” etc.

I agree with dry. I dig it. I love the aggressive bite I’m hearing.

Is there a Splawn amp that would be Less Dry than this?

No. They all have a dryness to them. It's their flavor. Some like, some don't.

This amp used to be mine, I sold it to him. I absolutely loved it, and should have hung onto it!

I've run JJ E34L and JJ KT77 in numerous amps, including a 2013 & 2019 QR, and my ears hear the same. E34L seem slightly more aggressive in the upper mids with a touch less low mid content. Not night and day, but it's there.

Well "good" is always going to be subjective. That is really up to the listener and what they consider good.

For me, yes it sounds pretty aggressive. I "hear" all the possibilities of how I personally could use it. "Feel" is hugely important as well but that's obviously something you cannot determine until you play it. However I think what most meant in regards to the "recording" is that it was honest and simple and gave a good representation of the actual sound of the amp in that environment. How many times on you tube did you see a demo of an amp and it's basically "produced" or running through and IR. To me that's not a good representation of what is actually happening.

I personally can't stand demos that run amps through IR's, and other studio bullshit. Hate it. Makes great amps sound like fizzy dogshit.

Yeah, the tone is totally subjective. Some will like it and some won't. This is a tone I normally go for though. If it sounds thin or scratchy, that could be my recording setup/mic position/speaker ect, etc. Anyone that has ever played a Splawn would most likely not use the work "thin".  I tend to like aggressive , grindy, percussive and did I mention aggressive?? Like I mentioned earlier, I'm mic'ing a real speaker and not using any IR's, High/Low pas filters, EQ of any kind. So it definitely is not going to sound polished or "Pro", But it does capture a good amount of what I hear in the room. I post some clips on Youtube, but I am not a Youtuber.

Yeah, thin & scratchy aren't words I'd use. That amp is big, bold and aggressive, for sure. And, in a very good way.
