How's that mode switch on the Super Comp? 1st light off=normal, 1st light on=less gain? That's how my older Splawn Competition is(pre gears) and I like it a lot. I love the way my Nitro sounds but would rather have a single channel amp with a lower gain feature like that. Don't really need a clean channel. I was loving my Nitro(and Comp) with my Marshall 1960AV(I also tried G12T75s and G12K100s) but I have another cab with 2 Splawn SBs on top and two V30s on bottom(V30s are a bit louder) and it is absolutely killer. Need to get a couple more of them thar puppies. What tubes you running now? I've got Winged C El34 and JJ pres and love it. Eq is a bit odd. I can't seem to get a bad sound out of it but I love the way I have it set now. Res 9, pres noon, bass 10, mid noon-1, treb 3 and gain about 11. Volume at 9 for "bedroom" levels. :D Running emg 81s. :worship:

seems like mode on the amp gets more bass and a little gain, but its not clear , seems like it would be cool for like a tele or strat for leads to fatten it up, not so much for rhythm playing, and it seems like od1/od2 adds gain and a little hair and oomph... but i enjoy it with everything off the most lol

It will be for sale in a week

Compared to what you have, the Splawn won't hold its own. I had a Nitro for about a week last year. I think there is too much stuff on it getting in the way, between input and output. Just my opinion though and the Comp or QR may be somewhat different. You do need a good practice amp to haul around though to help preserve the good stuff :D

Steve

haha we'll see, like i said the true test is Wed @ rehearsal... but yea, i need something that will allow me to keep my big boy amps safe @ home...Im always worried of my ccv or plexi getting stolen or damaged or something , which leaves me screwed!

Congrats!! I'm waiting for the day I can get my Nitro.

What exactly is the difference between the Super Comp and the Quick Rod?

Very cool. I really liked the Nitro that i played a few weeks ago. I would love to have some time alone with it.

As for a beater amp...you need to get a 5150, slap a bias mod in it, some C9 pre's and Winged C power tubes. Suck a cheap amp actually slays.

yea its a simple version of the nitro, no clean lol ! i like 5150 but i just cant jive with em though, this is more marshall eque pissed off sounding... let me know if you want to borrow it.

The Super Comp is a singe channel version of the Nitro. The Competition is a single channel version of the Quick Rod. Some say the single channel amps are a little "more pissed" than the two channel amps. Maybe. I know they sound bad ass.

yea this thing is pretty pissed! and man o man super articulate!
   Yeah, Scott Splawn builds amps for guys that are not, I repeat Are not afraid to be better players.
His amps hide No mistakes. He is a killer player so I guess he figures we should all be Killer too. When you see a rash of Splawn amps being sold and you read where the guy says, ' just got this but it just is not me"
In street terms it usually means, ' Fuck me running I can't believe how messy I really play'
In other words it is not the amps faulty, but Human error.
The Nitro is a two channel and the Super Comp is a one channel.
The Super Comp has the mode choice which the nitro does not have.
But this is a choice to pick where the mids emphasis is strongest according to what I was told.
The funny thing is almost every guy I have spoke with that owns a Super Comp, Liked the mode switch off.
Thus, why not just get the Nitro as it is the same as the Super Comp with the mode switch off.

Spot on Hollywood  Could not have said it any better than that!!!

I would love the hear clips of this. I had Scott build me a Competition a few years ago and I just could not get into that amp. Mine was really bright. Thing that puzzles me is that I've heard so many killer clips of Scott's amps. Was something wrong with mine?? I don't know. I even took it over the ratters house to try hear it through a different speaker cab. It was still super bright. Anyways I would love to try one of his amps agin just to see how I like it.

I have a Quick Rod and I LOVE it! Now my goal is to get a Nitro and run them side-by-side. I think they will complement each other with the Nitro filling in the lows and the QR handling the mids/highs. Should be an AWESOME sound. Can't wait!!

:rawk:

The Nitro and QR(or Competition) sound so awesome together. I've never heard anything better. I hook them both up every now and then. Two half stacks rocks. I recorded two little clips using the Comp and Nitro together. The first one I had miced up kind of weird. Two 4x12(V30s) angled in and a SM57 pointing at the point between the two cabs. this was one track and it's raw. No eq or anything. Here is that one.

the second one i just did. Two tracks raw. Nitro on the left and Comp on right.

I tried...thousands of dollars worth I tried to like Splawns but...Not to be....Good Luck Nick!!

  That's the problem. Don't try to like something. You either like it or ya don't. Save the trying to like for something like healthy food.

Here is a clip I Just did real quick.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZgbDZuYCHs

Final verdict the power tube that sounds best to me in this amp is the winged c kt88

I tried -

Ruby EL34bstr
Tungsol EL34B
Winged C EL34
Winged C kt88 = winner

Preamp tubes = Chinese...and sovtek LPS is you can find some that won't die on you...
Bias right around 55mv seemed best... the 88's tightened up some of the bottom and gave the amp a bit more oomph and headroom which is exactly what I wanted...Now i can use OD2 mode as it sounds crisper..

WOW....Nick that sounded awesome....Great clip  Sounds like you have it dialed in pretty good....

Nick that sounds awesome dude....Great tone there....The two amps mixed in stereo sound killer

Sounds good, but do you have anything with just the Super Comp? Clips sound great, but I'm curious how much we're hearing is the SC and how much is the Cameron.
