So.. on friday I came out of my last exam of this year, Chemistry.. (yay!), spent three hours in the car driving to Guildford and back to pick up my Jet City JCA 100h.

This thing sounds great, except I feel I may need a new cab soon, my Marshall 1936 just isn't as nice as the other cabs I've played this head through.

It has great cleans with lots of nice harmonics and more gain than I would ever need, it's got a huge, meaty overdrive with plentiful bottom end. it responds to boosts great too. It's basically everything my 5150 II wasn't. It doesn't do that 5150 tone though.

The chinese valves it came stock with are crap though, the shop floor model had Ruby's and sounded better, I'm looking forward for when these valves have had it so I can replace them, I've been looking into Kt66 and Kt88s, there's some definite modding on the horizon.

Oh, and since the place I bought it from (Andertons) have recently cut the chord with their Jet City distributer and are no longer official dealers, they knocked £150 off the original price.

Thanks! What did you think of ACM? I may be going there next year, I've heard mixed reviews however. I'll also be applying to BIMM, Leeds etc as well as traditional universities.

Congrats on the JCA man! There is definitely some fun in modding those things. The depth mod is the obvious one, but the resistor change to turn it into a real Soldano it also a cool one. Have fun!

Cool. I was secretly hoping you'd pick the Blackstar, but I am secretly GASing for a low-watt version of both amps. The 'dry' tone of Jet City is really cool though. It sounds great rolled off/cleaned up, but I've never been sure how volume is affected. It seems like it would be hard to balance the volumes of drive against clean.

If they were giving these things away, I'd probably take one of each. I'm going to have to pick one or the other though. What was it that tilted you toward the JCA? Was it just reliability/repairing? Or does the JCA emerge a clear winner in features or tone?

Anyway, congratufreakinglations! And good that your exams are over. I could use a lazy summer with a new amp.

Actually it was the tone, I found all the tones that I was looking for within the simple parameters of the Jet City's controls, it just sounded more... alive than the Blackstar, they're both great amps and I actually had to go and A/B them twice, as well as a Cornford Roadhouse 30 before I made my choice.

The cleans break up really nicely and the breakup is really responsive to playing, more so than the Blackstar I've found.

I was leaning towards the Blackstar, then I played both of them and just prefered the Jet City. If only it wasn't for these wank tubes.

ACM is a great school the teachers are all very helpful and motivating which i think is crucial, i can't imagine doing a degree there however, a lot of friends who went on to do the degree ended up dropping out after a year, as it wasn't quite for them, i mean the reality of a professional musician can be quite tough and not for everyone

I did the hDip, which was really cool, 1 year of intense playing/learning and looking at the wonderful (ahem music business, i went on to do an internship in a booking agency, and have been a promoter now back home for the last 3 years almost,

BIMM have Guthrie.. =0 but it really depends what you want, because ultimately you get out as much as you put in as obvious as that sounds, it's especially true for music related qualifications, i also have a degree in computing and french, which was quite a bit easier in comparison when thinking of the amount of playing i was doing while at the school (around 3-4 hours a day practice routine/reading..) and playing live in front of a random audience is nothing when compared to playing in front of 15 other guitarists carefully dissecting your playing =0

Obviously it's not going to really make it a real Soldano, but from what I was told, the only difference between the Hot Rod circuit and the JCA circuit is one resistor. If you do that, it will be like a Hot Rod made with cheaper parts. Now, if you replace all the parts with good shit...

HNAD!! That's cool you are diggin it man. I always have liked the Soldano sound and would imagine the JC stuff is not too far off with the exception of the SLO (league of it's own). IT probably sounds like my old Hot Rod 50 +. If it does not have the depth mod that would be first on my list to do.
