going in a partscaster. HH pickguard (not that it matters).wanting tight defined lows, pronounced mids, without the icepicky highs. and i like the pickups to be on the hotter side. i have always used emg's, but wanting to try something different. not quite sure of the body wood but i think it is alder.

LOVE my aldrich...it's great for tight bottom and non-icepick highs....but it's voiced pretty vintagey much more so than the EMGs you are used to (I switched from EMGs in the past year or so and haven't looked back).

From what you are saying sounds like the Nailbomb might be more up your alley. I haven't played it but I have tried a Painkiller and Aldrich one right after the other....two completely different worlds.

i had a painkiller, and sold it thinking i would be putting emg's in the guitar. i should have kept it and tried it. never really heard either to be honest. i got the painkiller in a trade, and wish i had used it.

i am trying to get away from the world of emg's myself, and go back to passives, just trying to find the right ones to fit my style.

I have EMG's and Aldrich. Never tried the Nailbomb, but have other BKP.

EMG 81 with 18v mod is a fantastic pickup for me. If you are into heavy gain I think its the best.

The Aldrich doesn't sound so heavy, it sounds more like a hard rock pickup. Kind of like a better JB. It also cleans a lot better, and has fantastic coil tapping properties.

Bare Knuckle pickups are in a class by themselves really, I would go that route even if I hadn't tried the higher output models, because they are just that good!

I know the feeling. My Dimarzio Crunchlab/Liquifire set and my Aldrich bridge has kept me from even CONSIDERING the EMGs again.
I hate to be a snob about it, but I am now. I can't do the EMG thing again.
I can't begin to explain how much better my sound sits in the mix from such a small change such as pickups.

well, the Aldrichs are a bit cheaper than BKPs...maybe you could start with them. Good news is, everyone loves both of those pickups so you shouldn't have a problem flipping them if need be.

I agree, it's not nearly as hot sounding or feeling...very "rock" but I've really begun to like a metal sound that begins with lower output pickups.

Just as an example of what I mean - If i remember correctly LoG uses Duncan 59s...pretty low output...into a mark IV.

big BKP fan here myself. You cant go wrong with BKPs.

I agree with your last statement, for me, lower output pickups work best into high gain, tighter and more articulate. My .02

Well I offed my painkillers and went with aldrich's and have been very happy. There are variables here to consider though. I was using with a Fortin which is a very tight amp on its own and I loved my tone but it was almost too laser-like, almost artificial. Very clanky because it was so tight. I'm not really playing death metal so I was actually looking for something a little more open sounding "woody".

As far as the nailbombs I cannot speculate as I have not played through a set. I will say the aldrich cleans killed the BK'S but that may not matter to you.

Without hesitation, Ceramic Nailbombs. Just put some in my Custom 24 and they kill in every respect. Crushing, but retaining depth, warmth and clarity. BKPs just sound so "honest".
