Hi guys,
I got offer to trade my Naylor Duel 60 for Carol Ann Tucanna 2 ? Both are very rare in Europe and similar price. Carol Ann seem to be more versatile with its 3 channels but Naylor has amazing drive channel. I miss a little Marshall hi-mid grind but I have 2203 for that. If Carol Ann is darker/smoother than it is not worth Naylor let go. I play in 70's hardrock tribute band and groove/thrash metal. Thanks.

I'd keep the Naylor if possible and try to trade something else if you can. My Naylor is one of my top 5 favorite amps right now for high gain and I've tried pretty much all of them except just a Larry

The real clusterf*** is the Tucana clean
channel plus the meaty Naylor drive channel
would be a killer amp!
The drive channels in the Tucana are dark and
HiFi sorta, hard to explain.
If you're aiming at Marshall grind, go Marshall.

I have slightly tweaked clean channel on Dual because original design starts distort too early and not in pleasant way but still Tucana seem to have better clean channel. But I use clean channel only for 3-4 song and doesn't mind slightly 'crunchy' clean. The other guitarist in rock band has fantastic sounding 2204 (clip below) and VHT Deliverance is in the metal band. So very mid dominating amps. I'm bit worried Tucana will be eaten alive :)
I played only one live show with Naylor. Here is how it sounds with rented L6 V30 cab.

I’ve got ‘79 JMP2203 myself. Awesome amp! I’ve not actually tried any Carol Ann’s yet. I’ve heard mixed things about them

For the style of music in that clip I’d say the Naylor and Marshall’s would be tough amps to rival. Maybe just a SLO or Purpleface (one-off amp sadly) of maybe also a Komet

I had '80 JMP 2204 in the past, great amp, touch smoother than JCM 2204. Now I have '93 2203. Strange year for JCM800, ins't it ? It has the same transformers as 90's SLP. On chassis is label 2203G Germany.

SLO is on my bucket list but it is quite unobtainium in Europe. They are around 4500E. I had Hot Rod's, SL60, SLO 30. The 30 has the sound but the smaller iron sounds .... just smaller :) I'm in 'Big iron' camp

Naylor has special smooth but cutting voicing, it reminds me blue channel on Ecstacy with touch better clarity. Low volume playing...best master volume, absolutely no need for attenuator. This is very important for me because 80% time I play on TV volumes and want to enjoy practice/writing.
Maybe I have to figure out testing both amps side by side and decide...

Was part of a mini amp fest a few years ago and there was a Naylor SD60 and a Carol Ann of some kind - I honestly can't remember what model it was. The Naylor was probably my least favorite amp that day, though I really can't remember much of anything about the Carol Ann or how it compared. I did get a chance to try another Naylor recently and felt the same about it - just doesn't do anything for me personally.

Side by side tests are ideal if possible imo. Then you’ll know if you really like it or not. I didn’t like any Carol Ann clips I’ve heard, but maybe in person could be different

The Naylor smokes the Ecstasy’s blue channel imo. Much more raw and aggressive. The Ecstasy’s for my taste are too polite and boring. Naylor has some smoothness in the uppermid’s, but still an aggressive, gritty, cutting amp overall

The clip you made of it sounded great though and is how mine sounds. Thought it was one of your best sounding clips actually. I guess it really just isn’t the amp for you for whatever reason. Do you like late ‘70’s JMP2203’s? To me it’s somewhat similar to my ‘79 JMP2203

Carol Ann makes great amps, but yes the drive channels are quite dark.

I would 1000% keep the Naylor, its one of the best marshall style amps out there.

I’ve only played one CA, 12 yrs ago and it was a nice full cleanish amp…I can see guys who play mostly dirty clean stuff diggin it. Don’t remember the model though. Naylor, has this super addicting sticky feel that only one amp I’ve ever played surpasses-2C+. It also has a contradiction in that the higher mids seem smooth while the lower mids are raw…crazy but that’s my take.
Plugging straight in, I got a fantastic bluesy rock tone….with a boost HR/Metal-ish(right boost needed for metal).
Naylor for me. Trading Sam (Braintheory) my 95 SD60 was a mistake-so much so I’ve got a Naylor on order.

This is the common denominator that OP will run into EVERYWHERE.

Every single owner who sells one seems to regret it. Me included, but not to the same extent, because my Larry fills my needs quite perfectly.

Almost every time you find a post about a Naylor SD, there's going to be a chorus of "god dammit, why did I get rid of that amp?"

How’d you like the Carol Ann’s? None of the clips I heard yet sounding any good to me, but clips are just clips
It can't articulate the sound, only that I found it uninspiring. The clean sound was good, but the gain structure was just odd to me. Maybe there are better models out there, I don't know? I believe Joe B. plays one, though I don't know which model? It reminded me of a CAE amp that I owned. Great cleans, gain tones languished.

ok guys, I doesn’t find any Carol Ann clip which sound better than Naylor’s, so I keep the Naylor.
