New Achillies Nemesis 2x12 with G12m65 Creambacks arrived yesterday.
Looks ok on top of my Port City 2x12 OS with UK Vintage 30's.
Must admit though, I'm now tempted to sell the Port City and replace it with another matching Achillies Closed Back 2x12.
When I play each cab separately, there are traits from each that I like and don't like...
Achillies Nemesis 2x12 with Creambacks:
I love the Creambacks for cleans and low-gain rhythm tones. In the Nemesis 2x12, they are warm yet have clear and detailed highs. Nice spank.
But I'm not a fan of them for high-gain tones. There's a bit too much sag in the lows for my tastes, and the lows and mids are too thick.
Not what I like from a speaker when I'm playing with lots of gain. Doesn't gel with the rest of my rig.
Port City 2x12 OS with UK Vintage 30's
Whilst the UK Vintage 30's in the Port City 2x12 OS sound perfect for high-gain tones, I've never liked this cab for cleans.
There's no sparkle or bounce in the Port City 2x12 OS, and my clean tones suffer for it.
It's a monster of a cab for high-gain, but with cleans it can get very stuffy and dark.
But when I play both cabs together at the same time, the magic happens...

I hear only the best qualities from each cab on either the clean or high-gain channel.
Cleans are warm, clear and detailed with a room filling sound.
High-gain rhythm tones are tight and punchy in the lows, yet rich and defined in the mids and highs.
And lead tones are smooth and round with just the right amount of bite.
Lovin the tones coming from the mix of cabs, but not totally digging the mismatch of cosmetics. Ha!
