Anybody know what the neck shelf depth should be for a R3 or R4 nut?

I have a guitar that has a 1 11/16 neck width, which should have a the R3 or R4 nut. It came with a R2 nut that is for a 1 5/8 neck width. The guitar neck is wider than the R2 nut. I got a R4 nut and the width is good but now it's to high, strings way to far off the board at the first fret and on. From what I get for dimensions on the Floyd site it looks like their is about a .040 in height between R2 and R3 nuts.

Would like to confirm this with someone taht has more experience than I do with Floyd nuts.

I had to actually file away a very small amount of wood at the nut area of my Charvel SoCal when i installed an OFR and new nut. I installed an R3 nut on mine i think.. Not 110% sure off the top of my head. The nut was sitting too high. Anyway, it took all of about 1 minute with a small file

Floyd used to (they may still, not sure) make a nut called the R4/2 written just like that on the bottom with the / mark. It's a nut that's the width and string spacing of an R4 but the height of an R2. See if you can get one of them from Floyd. If they don't make them anymore send me a PM and I'll check my stash I may have one I can part with. They're an oddball that have saved me in the past on a few aftermarket necks since it's a lot easier to pop on a new nut than set up to route the shelf deeper.

I have a Charvel SoCal body with a Musikraft neck. I upgraded to a OFR, onstalled everything and re-stringed the guitar and noticed the new nut height was higher. I got some calipers and mics, going to measure and start some off until I get it where it needs to be.

It's wiser to shave the bottom of the locking nut than it is the actual neck. You can easily replace a nut. The neck, not so much...

Going to hit you up on one of those R4/2 nuts

1 11/16th = R3 nut. I'd try that first. I've filed down shelves before thinking the nut was too high but it wasn't. Ended up shimming it back up...

I shaved a few mm of the shelf of my Jackson Stealth when I fitted a new nut for it. All went well. If you're worried, any decent tech should do it for about £20 maximum.

Yeah, I know the R3 is for 1 11/16. R3 and R4 have the same height also. The problem is that the shelf was cut for a R2 nut.

I have all the necessary equipment to correctly take the shelf down if needed, I just found out the R8 nut is the same as the R4 but with a lower height like the R2 nut.

Problem solved
