I am turning my 2car garage into a rehersal space and its getting close to done. I got everything drums, bass cabs etc. I just need a PA system that is good quality and pro to semi pro level.

I am not going to buy brand new since I am good at finding deals on used stuff. PA has to be loud enough to be heard over drums and bass/guitar cabs. I also dont care for low quality cheap crap either, I want something "nice" but like I said, I dont know shit about PAs.

What exactley do I need, I hear Crown makes good pro level poweramps, I figure I need a mixer and some microphones and monitors. So what do you guys recommend, I would like to make a list and hunt each item down one by one. :D

What is your budget? How many monitor speakers do you need? How many people in the band?

It sounds like a powered mixer might fit your application very well, but I am not sure if that would be high enough quality for you.

Size wise we are in a converted 2 car garage, normally we have a drummer, bass and guitar but sometimes we have a second guiarist to help out. Bass runs 2 cabs 8x10 and 4x12 and guitarist runs one stack but if we have 2 guitarists we run two full stacks. Right now we are not officially a band just friends that get together and try to put something together.

Budget wise I am buying used so I figure I can get a decent setup for 2k or less on the used market?

Just go ahead and throw out your suggestion and I will look into it, I am open to whateva I just dont want a underpowered or crappy sounding PA.

I forgot to add I don't know for sure how many monitors we would need but I figure I can add more as needed if I get a large enough power amp?

check out the peavey pr powered series or the samson live powered series.... really cool little boxe's i have em at the shop if you need em ,shoot me a pm i can ship it right to you...

Peavey, mackie, or carvin. You just need a powered mixer head and some speaker cabs

really depends on what you want the PA to do. I just use mine for vocals and I get by with a Yamaha EMX 68s powered mixer and a couple JBL MP215 cabs.

One of my friends who jams with me recommend this:

4 wedges

2 stereo power amps to match the wedges

24 channel board

2 31-band equalizers for feedback control but said I can add these later

Before you ask why 24 channels and not 8 channels we are running the bass through a XLR and into a mixer alond with a mic'd cab in the studio. So the bass will be on 2 to 3 channels alone.

I forgot to add we will be recording here as well that is why the 24 channel mixer was recommended.

I just picked up a nice little PA for my band a couple of weeks ago...good for rehersal and small gigs up to 200 seaters. Just perfect and got it second hand for about $2700.

Soundcraft FX16 board with built in Lexicon digital effects

Symetrix dual channel compressor/limiter

DBX dual channel EQ

Crown digital stereo power amplifier that puts out about 1200 watts a side

2 EV tops mids/horn

2 EV 18'' subs

For Mixers the allen and heath mix wiz are nice (I have a 16:2DX). Soundcraft makes good mixers as well. On a budget I like Peavey and Yamaha mixers.

One of the big things to figure out if how many monitor mixes you need. If you only need 2, than a power amp with 4 speakers is great. Otherwise you need 2 power amps and 4 speakers or all powered speakers. For passive speakers, the Yamaha club series SM15V are nice for the money. You can probably find the pervious IV series the SM15IV for cheap. Community speakers, yorkville speakers, and some Peavey's are nice too for the money for passive speakers.

For power amps I like the QSC RMX series, heavy, but good solid amps at a good price. I run Crown K1 and K2 amps, but they are more money.

:) for rehearsal we just use a mixer with one power amp and turn the mains facing us as monitors - no feedback problems as the speakers aren't directed at the mics

 seems you are using a *lot* of amp (two full
stacks + mega bass) for rehearsal...

Why do you need wedges for rehearsals?
Or are you gonna use it live in the future.

Just turn the speakers towards you.

I say screw the wedges, and put more cash into good speakers. Each of the guys can get themselves an in-ear system if they need monitoring. With full stacks for all string players, you`ll need 2x15" 2000 watt wedges to be heard, plus amping for them.

Mixer, amps, 2 good speakers. (And the odd effect)

What do you guys think of the BOSE L1 Model II? Worthwhile?

I think they're great Brad, but have you listened to QSC K-Series? 41 lbs per speaker 1000 watts of sound reinforcement perfection.
