Need advice. THis winter has wrecked havoc on my guitars. Hygrometer read 20% humidity.. getting sharped frets and warped pickguards. do you have any advice for how to properly humidify my electric guitars? thank you
You really can't go wrong with an old school room humidifiers for electrics. The refill can be a pain in the ass but you definitely want to run it in the winter.
I use a room humidifier and have 3 meters placed around the room. I keep all my guitars (~20) out and in stands and I cover them with cloth when not playing. Try to keep the room at 40% humidity. My humidifier has a pretty large tank, maybe 2 gallons and I normally go through a whole tank in about a day and half.
My wife keeps our humidity fairly regulated and a few of my guitars are still going cuckoo bananas. It seems I’m adjusting a truss rod every couple of days.
I'm sorry you had trouble with this. Last year I had problems too. After the repairs my luthier told me to do 2 things:
1. Use a humidifier and keep the room between 45% and 50% humidity in the winter and if you dont have central air get a de humidifier in the summer if the humidy exceeds 55%. Try and keep the temps between 65F and 75F. Consistency of humidity is more important than temperature,
2. Keep all the guitars in quality cases when not being played and use D'Addario Guitar Humidifier Packs. 1 by the headstock and 1 or 2 around the body.
