Does anyone have any first hand experience on building sound proofed iso chambers for 4X12 cabs? With a new baby coming this week I need to get the guitar volume under control somewhat. I don't need perfection cause the tracking room is in the basement of a house I just need something to control it. Maybe build one large one that can hold 2 4X12 cabs. I also have a 8X10 svt cab that I can maybe lay on it's side, not sure, maybe sell the 8X10 and get a 4X10. Anyway has anyone built these? I need specifics on how to do, technique, approach, material, pictures of them etc... I'm looking for 2 cabs with 2 mics on each.

Thanks

Sah5150 has a very cool box where there is room for mic placement, you could pm him.

Greazygeo also did a closet type installation and he uses Wizards and Plexis, ask him what he did.

My thoughts are 2x6 construction closet double rocked with a ton of moving blankets.

Pm sent, im going to let you in on a NC secret :D

Would you mind sharing so we can all learn? I'm thinking of getting a puppy in the spring and I don't want to raise a nervous wreck of a pooch because i was blasting away ..

A secret isn't a secret if you just blurt it out in public. It must be shared with the public privately, one by one in order to remain secret.

WTB more info

Adopt that puppy son. It will be the best thing you ever do (except have your own baby. Grats OP!!)

A&S Cases in North Hollywood makes a really cool 4x12 ISO box that has like smart people who designed it. Mark Day and I contemplated getting one for our loft but Its $2500 bucks  , I saw it at NAMM and they quick to point out that Mettalica has 9 of them.

The case is a double walled case with a sprayed in barrier between the walls. It has a convex wall with egg crate foam on both sides to prevent sound bounce back to the microphone. A pass through for cable couplers is provided to pass the inbound signal to the speaker and outbound signal from the microphone. The entire case is built in compliance with the ATA Spec 300 Cat 1 to protect all the gear while in transit.

The standard A&S Iso Cabinet case (before selecting any options) comes in black ABS & 1/2" birch ply with a 3.5" lid, 4 Colson HD casters, 3/4" casterboard and non-locking latches.

That's a whole lotta cake for one iso box.

Have any of you guys checked these out?

http://www.hermitcab.com/

Saw them at NAMM a couple of years ago. I have talked to Woody, the guy who makes them and he is really cool and helpful. I was going to pull the trigger on one but decided to do the closet thing and works great for me. I have a bunch of different cabs, speakers, mics so I can use whatever I want instead of being limited. Just a bunch of Auralex and moving blankets. Its not 100% quiet but really close and it sounds great.....

I keep hearing that.. in some cases, I also hear people telling me to forget about kids because your dog will always be more grateful! I'm quite looking forward to it, just finishing up a reno in time so there is nothing to chew on. Although BOSS pedals would probably make excellent chew toys... long lasting for sure.

So far the best plan seems to be the "recording closet" which i plan to build under the basement stairs. Rigid insulation for the walls and ceiling and then one moving blanket draped around 3 sides.

Checked out hose hermit cabs.. interesting concept and i like the design but 750 start point all the way up to 1250....... that's a lot of gear i could get for that.

Yeah, They are not cheap. The cool thing is you can use em live too.

My closet walls are covered in Auralex 3" and I use some moving blankets depending on what amp/cab I am using at the time. It does the trick....

I made one for 1 x 12 cabs.
Thick MDF, heavy 2" thick air tight lid.
Foamed on the inside.
Weighed a ton but the high density of MDF worked very well, very quiet even at full blast with a 100 watt amp.

Wow that A&S case looks awesome.

Anyone know what the reduction is?

It's a lot of cake though... A lot.

Why not just make a larger sized insulated box with the speakers mounted on a frame inside of it? Instead of a huge box to fit a 4x12 cab?

Also you can halve the cost of the egg crate foam by using the yellow bed mattress foam- it looks crappy but does the same job.

Actually I just came up with another idea- why not just get a bunch of big old mattresses, and use them to make an enclosed "wall" around your cabs & microphones?

Just lay a large king-sized one on the floor, sit the cabs and mics on top of it, surround the mattress with other mattresses on all sides as walls, then lay another king-sized mattress on top to close it all in. You don't need new mattresses, just get some old ones from hard rubbish collection on the street- just make sure they have no bugs first.

A&S is always expensive but I did hear it with the lid closed and it was damn near silent. They told me they made it in conjunction with UCLA audio department and did a ton of tests on the baffling and amount and placement of the foam. Who knows what was involved but it seemed to work if not being priced in the working musicians budget.
