Hi,

I'm planning to put together a mini studio at home. My idea would be to have a system where I can do some recording and play guitar with some backing tracks. I have a Friedman BE 100 that I want to use and want to have the ability to get the most out of it tone wise without getting in trouble with me wife and neighboors. I take that the Two Notes Torpedo live, the Two Notes Studio and the C.A.B. would allow me to do that (I understand that each product have features that are unique to them).

Based on what I want to achieve and the fact that I'm not a professional recording musican, which of these products would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Depends on what you want to spend, quite frankly.

The CAB won't be what you are looking for unless you have another loadbox to use with it.

I've had a Live since they first came out and they are a great unit. Everything you need is in one box. you can use 1 IR at a time for the cab simulations. I recently sold it and moved up to the Studio unit. I find it to be even better sounding and running 2 IRs in stereo is so nice.

I also use mine live as well so it serves a bunch of purposes for me.

Two-Notes has some fantastic cab sims on their site that you can purchase and import as well as sample before you buy using their remote app.

In your case, the Live would probably work very nicely.

Thanks PBGas for the feedback. I'm looking closely at the Torpedo Live. The studio seems to be too much for what I want to do.

Would I be able to connect the Torpedo Live to Studio monitors?

Save some money and get a Suhr Reactive Load, buy your favorite impulses, and find a free IR loading plugin. You could even get the Two Notes plugin which for recording does the same thing as the CAB pedal, although the Two Notes cab sims are inferior to offerings from Ownhammer, Celestion, etc. I've also had support issues with Two Notes but others seem to think they have great service. I currently use Fryette PS2 with NadIR using mostly Ownhammer IRs.

Do you prefer the Freytte PS2 over the Suhr Reactive Load?

Lots of ways to achieve your goal. The Two Notes Captor is the most cost friendly, then the Suhr, Fryette, Torpedo Reload, Torpedo Live then Studio in that order.

I love the Fryette stuff but I went with the Studio ultimately. Lots of guys recommend what they use. I'll say, grab the Captor and call it a day. Good return policy at Sweetwater.

The downside of this approach would be that you would NEED a PC running in your studio.
The Torpedo Live (and Studio units) could be run independently. Just Guitar--->Amp head--->Torpedo Live/Studio--->headphones.

I'm roughly in the same boat, although I do have a load of mid/high-end recording gear, but I've been able to keep the PC out of my homestudio for almost 15 years. (I record either on a Korg D1200MKII for quick demo stuff, or an Akai DPS24 (best/biggest all in one DAW) or an Alesis HD24XR + A&H GL2200-24 desk with external mic pre's added), and I'm seriously considering the Torpedo Live, so that I have a very controlled recording chain and so I can run my 100W heads balls-out.

I didn't want to wait for the Captor and wanted attenuation so I got the Reload but I agree, the Captor is the way to go with Nadir and loading ownhammer impulses. I like the ownhammer best. A little more detailed and less bass than what I hear from the Two Notes. They all work in a mix though. I can literally try out diff cabs and speakers and mics and all would be usable. The hardest part is picking which IR to use. I even made my own and I like them too.

Depends upon what you are comparing with. Sure...the stock IRs are good and workable. The Ownhammers are likely better than those.

The optional purchase IRs from Two-Notes done by some of the studios they contracted out (LaMirador, etc.) sound better than the Ownhammer stuff that I have tried and compared with of similar speakers/cabs.

Again, all IMHO when I hear it through my monitors. Either way, no one is going to be able to tell the difference in a quality mix.

As Spaceboy said, I don't know why you wouldn't just grab the Suhr Reactive Load Box for WAY cheaper than the Two Notes and be done with it. Get the MixIR2 plugin from Redwirez to run your IRs and the Celestion IRs and you'll have everything you need. You don't need the added capabilities of the Two Notes for what you want to do and the Suhr box sounds phenomenal with the Celestion IRs, IMO.

Steve definitely has the right idea with the Suhr Reactive Load (which I too own).

Don't even mess with the Torpedo Wall of Sound plugin for your IRs; what a colossal pain in the ass it was managing 3rd party IRs whereas Redwirez' solution is much more feasible.

I think I will go with the Suhr Reactive load. I want to set the chain as follows:

Guitar - Amp - Suhr RA - Apogee Duet 2 - Mac Pro - Studio Monitors (2)

Does this sound right? I will use the Redwirez plug in to manage the IR's.

Only thing missing is your DAW that you'll be running MixIR2 in... MixIR2 does not just manage your IR library - it is a convolution plugin that your run in your DAW to load and run your IRs...

Any reccomendations for a DAW that would be not too complicated to manage?

If you are going to be using a Mac, I like Logic Pro X - it's pretty easy to learn and use IMO. If you haven't used a DAW before, I'd get it. It comes with everything you need to make pro quality recordings. There are others that are cheaper (it is $199.00 in the Apple App Store), even free, but they come with far less and you'll end up spending a ton on plugins, etc.

If you are on Windows, I dunno...
