So dude contacts me says he wants my amp. Sends payment through PayPal this morning around 12:30am and than sends me a request to cancel the purchase at around 1am because he lost his job  I inform him I will do this but don't expect it to be done until I get home from work tonight around 11pm.

Whatever, I get home from work and log onto to Paypal- I don't see anything to cancel an incoming transaction and the money is sitting their w/ a button stating claim it. Obviously I do not claim it and ended calling paypal. Paypal instructs me to contact the buyer who flaked and tell him to close the case he opened on this transaction because Paypal stated I won't be able to issue a refund until he closes the case. I did send the buyer that backed out this info, but WTF! Am I missing something here? I just want to return the guys money and be done w/ this, but don't want to get fucked by PayPal or scammed somehow. Nothing like working a 15hr day and coming home to this crap. Any insight would be great. Obviously I'm not very Paypal savvy.

Thanks
Bob T.

I don't get it. What's he disputing?

Sounds like a bad case of buyer's remorse. Who gets fired at 1:00 AM?

You should be able to click "refund payment" right on the transaction. I think maybe he had too many beers, then changed his mind. Fuck these assholes today.

This whole thing sounds weird. I have done hundreds of pp transactions and never had a button that said "claim it".
Also if I wanted to open a case I always had to wait a certain amount of time before I could open said case . I think it was 10 days but its been a minute since I opened a case on a transaction.
I would call PP and have them straighten it out. that's the safest way to go.

Sounds like he really couldn't afford the amp in the first place......If you didn't transfer the money to your account(bank) and it's still in your PP account I don't see the problem, you should be able to refuse it and it should go right back.

That's what I tried to do but didn't see anything on PayPal that indicated I could refuse or cancel. I called paypal and they stated because a claim was filed I had to contact the party-buyer and have him "close the open case" than I could refund his money. This all sounds fucking weird to me. I still haven't touched anything on paypal w the money sitting their. I did send the buyer the info Paypal gave me, but haven't heard back. Like I said just want to give this guy his money back w/out me getting f'd through some scam and paypal. I'm hesitant to get on paypal and try to do anything at this point since Paypal instructed me to contact buyer and wait until he closes case.

@ 1am the guy realizes he's all out of meth, and just blew all his money on an amp. Panics

But seriously, it sounds shady AF. I would probably call PP like you did, and tell them you feel you're about to get scammed. I would not refund shit if it has not shown up as a completed transaction, with the balance showing in my account. Probably a scam that makes you think you received money when you haven't, then you refund, and get fucked.

If you cant refund then just let the money sit. Do not send the amp. Eventually he will want his money and close the case.

Yup. I've been using paypal since 2001 and have never seen that either.

and

Thank God I didn't have the internet during the 80s.

Why don’t you do as PP said and tell him you’re not able to do a refund until he closes the case?

You should be able to ‘refuse/refund/cancel’
No harm no foul.
I’ve had to do it in the past.

Should be a refund button. Once you refund his payment, the case will automatically close. There’s nothing the buyer can dispute. Now, if there is no refund button visible on PP, that sounds fishy.

Every PP payment that has been sent to me shows a REFUND PAYMENT button. Since he filed a PP claim before you were even able to refund his payment probably has locked things up. PP should have been able to issue your refund through back to the buyer so I don't understand what they are telling you. They should inform the buyer to close his claim so you can refund his money.

Since all you want to do is refund the guy PP should be able to make that happen and that would automatically close the case would it not?????????????

Paypal never seems to surprise me with their ridiculous policies. I'm sure you told him to cancel the dispute and I would make clear as per Paypal you cant actually do anything until he does. That should get him to move pretty quick. Meantime, nothing you can do. This could have gone a lot worse so even though its a pain in the ass you actually dodged a bullet. Still sucks though.

Also, login from a Desktop. I think the issue is Mobile version does not have this option maybe?

That is the case with Reverb for sure.

That appears to be the issue, but I've never been through this crap before. I've got a couple of emails in to the buyer but haven't heard back from him yet. I'm going to try and contact Paypal again later tonight (buyer indicated he's from California so possibly not home to check emails yet.) Although you would think he would have checked emails this morning to see what was up. This whole situation just doesn't feel right. Way to many red flags...

I appreciate all the feedback. This is definitely out of my comfort zone.

I did this. Waiting for his response.
