@JackBootedThug if you have the money, I'd take
@stratjacket 's offer in a heartbeat. APS Klasiks are often regarded as one of the best more affordable 'serious' monitors. If you check Gearslutz.com (I was a member before the woke name-change...

), the short-lists of the around $1000-1500 monitors typically include Neumann KH120A's, APS Klasiks, some Focals and Dynaudio's.
I'm rockin' Focal CMS-65's (followed up by the Shape 65's) myself in my homestudio, same price-range ($1200-1500 new) and I've tested a whole bunch of budget monitors before that, when I had M-Audio BX8's. Those BX8's were pretty nice for the price. The problem with cheaper 8" woofer-equipped monitors is that they often can sound quite wooly, bloated. Alesis Monitor Ones for instance; some of the worst I ever heard.
KRK RP8's; scooped and woofy. Whereas the smaller KRK RP series were somewhat decent.
Yamaha HS8's not bad; I found them quite mid-forward, borderline aggressive sounding, but...with great transient response. If you've been to studio's where they had Genelec 1031A's, it's more of that sound, opposed to the 'softer/smoother' Mackie HR824 or Meyer HD1 sound (note that HD1s are miles above HR824's, detai;-wise but both are not as in-your-face as some others).
ADAM has some good ones as well, but the ribbon tweeter can be an aquired taste. I like them.
I read some high praise about the Kali ones as well. Never heard them myself, but they seem to offer a lot of bang for the buck. IN-8 version has a coaxial mid-driver/tweeter combination (4" + 1") and an 8" woofer.
Some more options (don't know them) in that price range:
Focal Alpha 80
Tannoy Gold 8
JBL 308P MKII
