My right hand is wicked weak. It's probably my biggest area of weakness on guitar and it's a real bummer. I can speed pick but I have a hard time keeping it consistent will going from string to string.

Thing is, I've always played a lot of legato lines/passages and I've recently got into more staccato playing. I don't expect an overnight thing but aside from the normal stuff (Metronome, slowing songs down etc.) what can I do to strengthen my right hand attack?

I'm not going for Batio speeds, but definitely trying to shred more accurately. Looking for artists, songs, lessons etc.

Thanks guys!

It can be overnight...3 simple secrets-behold:

Freaking simple, cheap, and immediately awesome

Also try this, the only arpeggio book that ever made sense to me:

And here's a great site to tie it all together for theory:

You're the man! Thanks.

I've actually heard about the stylus pick but I thought it was gimmicky. Anyone (yourself included) actually try it?

I don't mind hard work, I just want options.

Practice... slowly. If you're making mistakes, slow down. If you're still making mistakes, go slower.

Bob, I need to shred. Not cool at all.

It's not super sloppy, it's just not as fluid as I'd like.

I'm very, very critical of my playing regardless.

No gimmick. I got the stylus in the 80s and somehow never lost it..it keeps you picking on the tip of the pick, which is prime efficiency for flat out speed. If you dig in too deep, there's a groove that catches the string and annoys the crap out of you, keeping you back on the tip.
I think it's <$10. Spend 5 minutes with it then switch back to your regular pick and you will fly.
Great stocking stuffer.

I'm checking out testimonials on the site now. It seems pretty cool. I'm self taught so I need a corrector. This is much cheaper than going for lessons (which, I want to do).

I'm gonna get the practice book too that they recommend.

Thanks again!

That's typically the advice of 99.9% of teachers, but then I saw Shawn Lane saying the opposite-advising me to just go for it as fast as I possibly can at all times then work on quality, lol. That's all I needed to hear to support my lack of disciplined approach

I manage to make this upside down approach work, albeit my technique can quickly turn into a slop fest. Just another viewpoint to balance in..probably should try everything in my quest to reign supreme

What Bob said!!! There are tons of books out there. Even Petrucci's "Wild Stringdom" should help.

Thanks Rob.

I practice a lot but it's always left hand practice. I'm always working on left hand speed and I've been neglecting my right since I picked up a guitar.

I need to correct my posture and pick attack. Not looking replace hard work, just looking to work on issues.

I do like how the pick will physically stop me playing if I'm going too fast and playing too wildly.

I wouldn't waste your time ordering that Stylus pick, some music store I was in once were giving those away....I threw it in the trash the same day.

What pick are you using? I do like beveled ones for fast playing like Dunlop Gator Grips.

No shortcuts for practice.

This. Once you have it down you'll start playing it fast out of boredom.

Just checking, but you do realize the Stylus is meant only for practice, not any kind of performance, so comparing it to the Gator Grips (which I love) is irrelevant

You have to slow it down!! I still struggle with that at times.

I do use a beveled pick but this isn't a replacement nor a cheat in anyway.

I'm just looking for a way to correct my pick technique before I move forward. I've never had a lesson and I need to nip some problems in the bud such as hand placement and what I accent.

I know practice is behind all of this but it's just another tool.

I still practice to a metronome. I still start slowly and practice one piece at a time.

I did not find a use for it, sorry.....also I didn't compare it to a Gator grip, I just recommended using a pick with bevels.

This is a true thing. I traded some picks with a buddy awhile back and he threw one of those in there; I was dubious but willing. Messed around with it for a few hours and then went back to one of my regulars and was much faster. It taught me to use much less of the pick tip and that's where I was going wrong...I'm now using a beveled V Pick with a pointed tip and the rhythms I'm getting are phenomenally fast for me. It's absolutely going to annoy the fuck out of you until you get it though....you're gonna hang all the time.

PM me your address and I'll throw it at you, dude.
