Within the last 2 hours Geddy Lee says Peart isn't retired.

He's not retired from Rush........but he's pretty much done with going out on tour. They'll play live, but just multiple shows at a few select venues where folks will have to travel to see them. Rush fans will travel to see them no problem! lol

Portnoy couldn't wipe Peart's ass on his best day.
  Agreed

It will be funny to read about him auditioning if geddy and alex dont decide to hang it up as well.
I don't see that ever happening.

When Neil's daughter was killed and his wife died soon thereafter, Neil was completely out of it, not sure he'd ever come back to music. Back then, Geddy and Alex were not even considering going on without him. Now, almost 20 years later, I'm sure they haven't changed their minds. I'd bet the two of them are glad to have an excuse to be done touring.
Yep

Believe it or not, living in Canada and growing up through the 80s as a teenager, I never saw Rush until this past June. I know...what the hell is wrong with me! Lol! It was a band that was regularly on the radio but one that I wasn't overly drawn to. Don't get me wrong, I know all of the songs and most of the history, but I was into the other heavier stuff growing up.

I saw the show them live for the first time this year and it was fabulous! So glad I got the chance.

I saw Rush several times in Denver. 1997 on the Test For Echo tour at Fiddlers Green. Drove the 500 miles with my brother. Was an awesome show. Rush has been our favorite band since at least Moving Pictures. Exit Stage Left is my favorite album of all time. I used to fall asleep every night to the transition between The Trees and Xanadu.

Then I drove the 500 miles by myself in 2002 to see them on the Vapor Trails tour also at Fiddlers Green. The night was magical... especially after years of thinking they were done. Every fist was raised in unison for most of the night... particularly during Spirit of the Radio. It was pure nirvana. Like a glimpse of heaven. Many bodies... one heart & mind in that special moment. Then I immediately drove the 500 miles back home to MT thru the lonely, dark Wyoming night. It was worth the very long day.

Then I filled my Suburban with $4 a gallon gas in 2008 and drove my wife & kids down to see them at Red Rocks. But a severe storm hit the area in the days around the show and we found out about its postponement while we were listening to a classic rock station, killing time in Golden, CO the day of the show. Was a huge bummer that my kids stil havent forgotten about.

I took my wife back in 2010 to see them at Red Rocks again... this time playing all of Moving Pictures... a huge deal for me because I'd been dreaming of seeing them play The Camera Eye since I was a kid. It was worth the wait and I will always remember that night.

I passed on the opportunity to see them this tour, because I'd seen them "enough" and between Ged's vocal issues and Alex' sometimes sloppy chops... I just didn't think it would be worth it. Then I read Eddie Trunk's review of that show the day after and had instant regret. Still do regret it! Especially in light of their semi-retirement.

Fast-forward to a couple of weeks ago when I stumbled upon the R40 Blu-Ray at my video/book store... nabbed it immediately. I've been busy and haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I'm going to do that today! Looking forward to Xanadu. The other ones on there that I've always loved are Subdivisions and Between the Wheels.

Anyways... thanks for all the great moments to Ged, Alex and Neil. I hope Neil enjoys his Beemer bikes and Aston Martin car. I sure would! A life well-lived and a job well done for the boys...

Great story!
My Wife has read all of Neils books and many others about Rush. She'a real Neil fan for sure.

First show-power Windows. Mind blown. Second show-presto-holy shit! Third show-roll the bones-primus as the opener-stunning, fourth show-counterparts- I'm addicted!!! These guys are on a different planet man. Amazing live. Hope they do t hang it up. Loved Geddys favorite headache too.

sorry to jump in one a celebration thread, but you clearly don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

Peart is a great drummer, but is not working at Portnoy level, sorry to break it to you.

Portnoy is a great drummer, and probably beyond Neil from a technical perspective. But since when is that the complete measure of a musician? Has Portnoy influenced others on a level of his idol (who happens to be in fact Peart)? Not even close. Did Portnoy break new ground in rock drumming at the same level as Peart did? Not even close. Does Portnoy have Peart's lyrical prowess? Not even close. Michael Angelo Batio has technical skills far beyond Joe Bonamassa, Eric Johnson, etc. But who are the more complete and influential musicians?

I've seen Rush on every tour since the signals tour in '82-83.......

When I lived in the beautiful island of Jamaica between 1984-2000, I would fly to Miami to see them every tour without fail. Great times!!!

I was born in Toronto & actually lived in Willowdale where Ged & Alex grew up.......so I guess Rush is just in my blood! lol

Most magical band ever!!!

after 40 years in i am not shocked. he will still be one of the very best drummers ever!

Neil is one of the greats , never seen Rush , If I get a chance I'm going to have to get tickets no matter what the cost .
