New Amp Day: Mesa Triple Recto

I just got a Single recently, and I am using some EL34 equivalent power tubes in it into a Carvin 4x12. (thanks Drucifer and BigBrewtus) I used it recently with an Egnater Tourmaster 2x12 at church using a Harmony H74. I found that that combination liked the Way Huge Pork Loin into the Modern mode with gain on the amp at 10 o'clock. This gave me a super tight tone without being chuggy... It also liked my Nobels ODR-1+ with all the knobs at 12 o'clock into that mode as well to get a "sloppier" tone.

Haven't gotten to try the Plank Cranker yet... that should be fun.

Took it out cab shopping today. Didn't get to try out too much, unfortunately.

Slant Recto Standard: was hoping to like this, but sadly did not. Lots of bass. Lots of presence. Not much in between. Not the cab for me. Maybe I'd prefer the straight.

Recto 2x12: use to own one of these years ago with a VH4 and I loved the cab (and the amp, but that's a different thread), but this was before I bit the bullet and starting buying 4x12 cabs. This time, it sounded really small. As nice a cab as it is, it just couldn't compare to the bigger 4x12.

Weird Mesa open-back 4x12: tiny little thing with four C90 speakers. Sounded pretty nice, really, but no way could it handle the low end of the Recto. With a six string at moderate volumes, maybe, but not with my seven strings and definitely not with 7 string as the volume started to creep up.

Bogner Goldfinder 2x12: open back again, but it held the low end reasonably well. Sounded huge. Very much like a 4x12. Really can't believe how nice every Bogner cab I've played has been. Almost bought it, but 1) at loud volumes it still couldn't hold the low end and 2) at loud volumes I was very nervous that the Triple was going to blast apart one of the speakers in this thing (only two speakers, one of which was a Greenback... asking for trouble).

On the plus side, figured out why I've been struggling to get my own Marshall 4x12 to sound right with the Recto: coupling. It's just been sitting directly on the floor. Got the cab off the floor, suddenly all is right. I don't have the dial the bass way back to keep it under control and I don't have to have the presence up real high in order to hear any cut. Ah... that's better.

Let's see...

I've played a number of Fryettes. The Deliverance is absolutely amazing. They're very dynamic, too, of course. But lots of people talk about that and I was expecting it going in. But Fryettes always stay tight, even under various pic attack. The Recto will completely change character on you. Turning from growling and tight to furry and loose based solely on pick attack. I didn't notice any of the Fryette's I've played doing that. But I also only had a few minutes of time with any of them. But damn a Deliverance 120 into a Bogner 4x12 was freaking awesome. I don't see how I can avoid buying a Deliverance one of these days.

I disagree that the G12-65 is mid scooped. Maybe in comparison to the V30 everything seems mid scooped, but I think the 65 watters just have a ton of bass in addition to the ton of mids. The T75, whoa buddy that's mid scooped, though. I agree with that.

And I do like the Recto on 8 ohms. My only cab at the moment is 16 ohms, but Mesa swears it's a safe mismatch, so I'm running with that.

I honestly don't have gobs of exp with the 65's so you would know more than I. The Fryettes are tight, but they are dry, and if your pick attack is uneven, they WILL notice it. I like VHT/Fryettes because I tend to play hard, and they respond to it very well when "wetter/more saturated" amps don't. Also, dudes that are used to wetter amps sound like ass on my Ultra Lead, and it makes me feel better about my mediocre playing lol! Anywho, good luck on your cab search. I still like DR's through an Orange 4x12 though. Mesa cabs are too light IMO.

Just curious if the 'weird mesa open-back 412' had a metal grill or if you had any pictures?

I as wondering if it was a cab like this:

Nope, it had a jute grill and a large Mesa Enginering logo (rather than Mesa/Boogie). It was small: only the length of the Recto head and just barely deeper than the head. Back was completely open (not half sealed, half unsealed). It did have an elaborate back panel and center post, but in no way was the back sealed.

I really like the idea of the cab. Very well built and sounded great. Just can't handle a loud 7 string through a Triple Recto.

EDIT: here it is. http://www.mesaboogie.com/catalog/acrob ... -42-43.pdf

It's a 3/4 Back 4x12 cab. That link at least shows the front of it.
