Okay, so I finally got a 2x12 cab. Picked up an Orange PPC212 unloaded in damn near new condition. Great because I already had a pair of speakers specifically to load in a 2x12. Put a pair of Celestion Century Vintage neodymium magnet speakers in. Sounds pretty killer. Compared to my 17 year old Celestion V30's, the Century Vintage is not quite as bright. They sound close enough and I like them. One thing that I think contributes to this is the pretty dense and tight basket weave grill on the Orange. If I wrapped that stuff around my face I might have a hard time breathing.
It's gotta affect the tone.
I love the weight savings too. So the loaded Orange 2x12 weighs 56.8 pounds. By comparison, my friends Splawn 2x12 loaded with a SB and BB speakers and which is 3/4" less wide and deep weighs 65.2 pounds. It is more portable than a 4x12 but not by much. Standing it on it's side it's as tall as my 4x12 and only 9 1/2" less in width. Still, it is a little more portable.
Had my friend bring over his DSL and Splawn 2x12 and we A/B'd amps and cabs. Pretty fun.
