New cab incoming (tested with evh & friedman)

So here's an update to the question I'd posed in here a week ago about 5150 iii and greenbacks.

Brought my 50 watt over to my buddy's to run through his Marshall 4x12. I forgot to look at the badge on back, but it's older, has an angled baffle, and has greenbacks. Ended up running my amp, his lbx, and his pink taco through it.

The cab is fantastic. I was concerned with flubby low end, considering I am heavy handed with the palm mutes. My worries were dispelled quickly enough. It sounds big, open, and warm. No farting on the low end whatsoever. The mids are pleasing, as is the high end. I dial things in bright, but it wasnt piercing in any way. A nice and chewy tone with harmonics out the ass and a great thunk when doing the chugga chugga. This was the result both cranked a bit and at tv volume.

The lbx sounded a lot nicer thru this than my evh 2x12 (still dig that cab, though); big, full, warm.

The pink taco (which I didn't really like through his 1x12 evh cab, but that still needs to be broken in) sounded less nasal than before. That amp is still too dark for my liking, however, playing it through the marshal yielded much better results. That's not an apples to apples comparison given the differences in speakers, cab size, and one not being fully broken in, but it is what it is.

Used my stock epi lp to start. Nice gem of a cheap axe, actually. The cab got rid of the low end flub I experience when using the evh and powerball through my 2x12 at home. Then we moved on to his peavey wolfgang archtop. That sounded great, too.

This cab is a fucking winner. Doesn't fall apart under heavy gain (dimed on blue, about 9:30 to 10:00 on red), and you can hear every note when busting out an open E major. Fucking KERRRANG. Can't wait to run my powerball through it.

On a somewhat related note, I ran a couple pedals through my 50 watt. The tc electronics hall of fame reverb sounds good. Like, really good. Warm, musical reverb with no tone suck. And then there was the mad professor one, which I ran through the clean. Not to be a dick or anything, but that pedal sounded like ass in a small box. Maybe I'm a moron or something. Who knows? It sounded small, fizzy (not in a good VH1 way, either), and harsh. Reverb was decent, though, so that's a thing.

On ANOTHER related note, I had planned to install a duncan pegasus in the epiphone (whole reason I brought that guitar). No go. There is some kind of bizarre wiring harness/clip in there neither of us had any experience with. We opted not to butcher the thing. The pup will have to wait for now.

So that's that! New cab incoming (wouldn't fit in my car. ...hehehe), and it sounds killer.

Thank you for your time,
The Management

-I'm surprised you found such a big difference between the MARSHALL -(a cab)- and the EVHIII b-cab, -(are the EVH speakers broken in?)-

-try PRESENCE @ 75% then adjust your TREBLE.

-try a 1 meg volume pot on your EPI-(by-pass the treble and all the split coil & phase crap)-

-I'm SG~GUY and I support this post-

I've tried high presence and low treble. Gets a little too glassy on the high end. The speakers are pretty well broken in. I've had it for 3 years, and I don't play quietly lol

But they're going to sound different. 4x12 aND 2x12 project differently, then we're talking British greenbacks vs H30 speakers.

And don't get me wrong. .I do like the evh 2x12. But I dig 4x12 cabs, too, and this thing has the goods.

-my bad-

-thought had a EVHIII 4X12 & a 2x12-

Hehe. .no problem. I hear good things about the evh 4x12, too

I put V30s in the bottom half of my EVH 4x12 and my EVH 100S sounds amazing through it. I also have a 2x12 cab with G12T-75s and the 100S sounds like dogshit through it. Though my SLO sounds great through it. I've used a Marshall 4x12 with (I assume) G12T-75s in it at the studio and my 100S sounded fine through it. Weird stuff.

Speakers and cabs can be a crap shoot for sure

Nice. I've decided the GB is the only speaker for me. Sounds like your going to like them too.

Marshall cabs can sound as good as any. Had a Bogner V30 cab for a bit, sounded just a bit better than my Marshall V30 cab. Not enough to justify a 300$ price difference though. Like to find a vintage early 70s Marshall someday.

Me too. I've tried a ton of speakers and liked many of them, but keep coming back to greenbacks and the scumback M75-PVCs and BM75s (greenback clones). I'm just a greenback man I guess.

They're kind of a staple. For getting the tones I like, anyway. No good rig should go without them :D
