Got some new stuff in today! And naturally I thought I’d make some clips for you guys.
got my second BAE 1073 mic preamp, as well as a M201 mic. Also got the fredman mic clip for shits and giggles, although I’m usually a fan of one mic only. This turned out pretty killer though I must say. A few things on the fredman technique:
Ive seen multiple people claim there is a “right” way to blend the mics, but I found the only way to get anything close to bright enough to fit in a mix was with the off axis 57 no higher than -16 db under the center 57. Anything over that just got way too bloated and dark, it really just would never work with both mics at unity, and this was with extremely aggressive 5150 settings. Sounded great like this to me though and would be great in a mix.

The second is the 57/201 mix: not totally happy with this yet, as I only had alittle bit of time, but this is also with the 201 dead center on the cone, about -16 db under the 57 again. Signal chain:

Jackson custom shop B7, deactivator pickups
peavey 5150
Uber cab: V30 mic’d on all clips
Horizon precision drive

Twin unidyne 57s on fredman clip
57/201 on second clip.

I have my Engl 4x12 that has 2 V30s in it that I’m going to try out in the next day or two for the “real” fredman test, and it’s a much brighter cab than the Uber, so we will see. The OA mic any higher just seemed to sound more phasey(even though the mics were as much in phase as they possibly can be) and washed out the transients too much, for me personally. But we will see, it’s just a fun experiment, I mostly bought it to help with taming harsh high end that can get out of control sometimes, but it’s still hard to say I like it better than just a well placed 57.

I have one of those clips as well. I dig it, though most of the time I still prefer a single 57 as well. Through both my front and rear load v30 cabs I usually find I’m somewhere between -7db to -11db on the off-axis mic. I haven’t had success at unity gain either. There’s a YouTube video with the guy himself using it. He says he has it set up at unit with no eq and it sounds good. I have yet to crack that code though lol.

Bad ass

Reminds me of the tone off KSE's Disarm the Descent album

Thanks man, great album, great sound! I’m guessing you mean the 57/201 combo? I could totally see that vibe with that setup for sure.

Yea I just don’t see how it’s possible. I mean I am going to try it with my Engl cab this week for sure as well for the “real” fredman test, and it’s a much brighter cab, but even still, don’t see how it’s gonna be even close to bright enough at unity gain. -10db was almost ok, and sounds nice and smooth for playing by yourself, but no way it would ever be bright enough to work in a mix, Atleast with my setup and the Uber cab. I gotta post clips of the -10 db and unity gain clips just so people can see how dark it really is: and to show once again glenn fricker is an idiot and can’t be trusted :)
