New album out 9/11/20

Medium Rarities will have some live songs as well as new and also some cover songs.

One of the covers will be Metallica's 'Orion'. Def looking forward to that!

Not sure how I feel about this one below yet. Love the guitar (as usual) but they are definitely experimenting more - as they have stated that they will. Long live Mastodon

'Medium Rarities' tracklisting:
1. Fallen Torches
2. A Commotion (Feist cover)
3. Asleep In The Deep (instrumental)
4. Capillarian Crest (live)
5. A Spoonful Weighs A Ton (The Flaming Lips cover)
6. Toe To Toes (instrumental)
7. Circle Of Cysquatch (live)
8. Atlanta (feat. Gibby Haynes)
9. Jaguar God (instrumental)
10. Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife
11. Blood & Thunder
12. White Walker
13. Halloween (instrumental)
14. Crystal Skull (live)
15. Orion (Metallica cover)
16. Iron Tusk (live)

The Orion cover has been around for a while if it is the one from the Kerrang Master of Puppets cover CD

If I remember correctly the Orion and Master of Puppets covers were good and the rest was... not

1 Machine Head - Battery
2 Trivium - Master of Puppets
3 Mendeed - The Thing That Should Not Be
4 Bullet for My Valentine - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
5 Chimaira - Disposable Heroes
6 Fightstar - Leper Messiah
7 Mastodon - Orion
8 Funeral for a Friend - Damage Inc

I'm a huge Mastodon fan and sorry to say that I am not impressed with what I am hearing so far...

Maybe this will be one of the weaker songs. It is probably a good song but all of us that are Mastodon fans are used to a higher standard. It is pretty good but doesn't have the highs and lows of their other stuff. Just stays in one kind of "theme" for most of the song. That's what I noticed anyway.

i stopped listening to mastodon at crack the sky. this song is ok, nothing im feeling the need to hit replay on though :dunno:

As far as their recent efforts, I REALLY like Emperor of Sand. Play it probably once a week. I'm pretty keen The Hunter too. That album had more of a Rush or Pink Floyd or Tool thing going on. Emperor was more straight forward and traditional but it is proving to be my favorite album of their's. I put in Crack the Sky last Sunday and that album has just lost its luster for me - but I know it is a favorite of many.

I'm going to give the new material a good listen.

I liked the song but felt the production had this cluttered quality to it. Dynamically it was constricted. But not terribly so.

As the rest of their stuff, all I hear is a drum solo. It could be great , but the drummer stomps all over the entire song.

I love them but sometimes I need to hear some of their stuff a time or two before it clicks with me other stuff is immediately awesome to me. I won a signed poster from an Atlanta show while trying to win Bill's Axe III. My wife was going to get it framed for me for my birthday later this month which I thought was cool. Bill is a cool guy and someone you feel like you've met before plus he has cool gear. Im definitely looking forward to hearing the entire album

Not great, not terrible...I am not sure what to think. Left me feeling irritated and had a spastic vibe type thing to it that was just odd to me but also a bit familiar with them. Not their best work by any means.

Why bother on record new albums instead of getting a better live?

Not sure when's the last time you saw them live. They were terrible live when I saw them in 2011 to where I had written them off. I saw them again in 2018 opening for Primus and they absolutely slayed. OK, maybe just had a good show, 50% hit rate. Saw them again last year doing the whole Crack the Skye record and again, they put on a clinic.

I think over the past several years they have sobered up and tightened up. They're arguably the best live metal band out there right now.

Lastly, it's not like bands can really play out live right now anyways so why not put out a record?

I heard this song on the radio on the way home today and liked it a bit better than when I originally heard it.

I like how they go from faster stuff into this slower, grinding stuff and this song doesn't do it enough early on.

Seems like there's only one new song (the one OP posted). Some of the stuff dates back to 2006/2007. Most of the songs are on youtube.

Good points. Sorry if I didn't state the facts correctly. NEW New album is due out in 2021.

Instead of starting a new thread:

This sounds cool. Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye were their peak for me.

I for one am eagerly anticipating my Friday and enjoying this new record. A new double album from one of my favorite bands sounds like a key ingredient to having a great day. The first 3 singles have been really enjoyable to me. Pushing the tides is the least intriguing of new stuff so far for my ears... teardrinker and sickle and peace get them back into some proggy stuff and I love it.

Can't wait to hear it. I always grab their new stuff.
