New Meshuggah albums

I have been ignoring them for 20 years. Since a week ago I have been listening to Immutable and I must say, it is really boring compared to Destroy Erase Improve, which is a masterpiece.
I mean they're playing great and all, but to me it has been boring for years.
Thoughts?

I'm a huge Meshuggah fan and love the more recent albums, including Immutable. But their sound and writing approach definitely changed with the switch to 8 string guitars during the Nothing era. It's not as fast and technical sounding overall but it still has this insane groove to it that is just amazing imo.

Koloss is my favorite album of theirs to date. All of their work since Destroy Erase Improve has been great, but Catch 33 is their high water mark.

Kinda agree with you on this. Their best albums are Destroy Erase Improve and None. Hands down. The newer stuff I don't dig as much. Koloss is okay. I like their older guitar tones better too. But that's just me!

I can listen to the new stuff, but it to me most sounds too even, no climax, a steady flow of notes.

It just does not knock my socks off. I think they should do a Dixieland album for a change.

I got Catch 33 in 2006 as my first Meshuggah album after reading Adam Jones' quote from his Guitar World interview for 10,000 Days. He said they were the next level of Metal. It was like discovering Metallica with ...and Justice for All. Dry, relentless, multiple listens required to fully "Get it." C33 took many more listens to get due to the exotic and eccentric time signatures, riffs, and continuous "Album as one long song" theme.

Obzen was killer too, but Catch 33 is one of the finest metal masterpieces in all history. It takes you to a psychological territory previously unmapped, a mental/emotional environment of such depth it's akin to being lost in the Scandinavian winter, alone.

Meshuggah awakens the spirit. That is their magic.

I agree. Im sure if I did a recap of my music listening of the last 25 years they would near the top, but the last two albums I’ve barely listened to

I love Meshuggah. None, Obzen, Koloss, Violent Sleep of Reason, C33, Chaosphere, Nothing, DEI. All are on regular rotation for me. Actually love contradictions collapse possibly the most. Immutable is probably my least favorite but it’s still great!

Contradictions Collapse is one of my favorites and criminally underrated I think, I wish they would tune back up and go more thrashy like that album

I will have to check out this album. I don't know how much of their old stuff I have heard

Yeah, I think the 8 string stuff has some good moments here and there, but it is very hit or miss. Some of it is just droning and boring.

DEI, Chaosphere, and None are amazing. I still think DEI is the type of tone I tend to dial in to this day. That scraping chunk.

It’s like a more technical 80s Metallica, nothing like anything else they have done
Sounds awesome. I am not a huge fan of 8 strings. I have played one and it was kind of fun. But i like dstandard at the lowest for my own stuff

Back in the old HCAF days, they were the metal tone to have, and I feel still is.

Naw, newer metal wants that honking mid, no bass sound, lol.

Me, for sure. I still love that scooped chunk with upper mid scrape sound. That's my jam!
