I foolishly sold my Splawn Super Sport last August and when my 5150 just wasn`t doing it for me I wanted my Splawn back but the new owner wanted to keep it so I cured that itch and bought a Friedman. Well the guy that bought the SS got ahold of me a few weeks ago and to make a long story short I`ve got it back , lucky for me it`s still in the same excellent shape as when I Iast saw it. I was thinking about having it converted to EL34s before I sold it and I`m still toying with the idea , it sounds great with the 6v6s but there not EL34s LOL but I kinda feel I should leave well enough alone , we'll see. Anyways here she is

Awesome ! Splawn threads never get old

The besides the SS, the Quick Rod has been on my radar for a long time. Kick ass amp all around.
Congrats.

Do you run it through that Avatar? What speakers are in it.

been there, done that.

Regret selling a Special Splawn that is. Can be a terrible thing...

You sold your splawns? I think I remember you from the Splawn boards.. you had an orange competition then got a QR right ?

Not to hijack this thread, but a comp is pretty much the QR without the clean or is the gain structure a bit different?

Super Comp is the single channel version of the Nitro.
Competition is the single channel version of the Quick Rod (3 Gears etc).

Been awhile and my memory ain't the same but I think he had my old Competition. :)

Great amps regardless.

Hey hammered, a lot of us are aware of the main differences between the Friedman and the Splawn tone but any more info you can add that hasn't already been covered? I've had a Splawn so I'm familiar with that but have only heard clips of most Friedmans.

As far as comparisons go, seems like most folks say Dokken, Ratt, VH tones are all Splawn and Alice in Chains and heavier type tones lean more toward the Friedman. Also Friedman is more lower mids and Splawn higher mids. Of course I haven't heard the Splawn with the newest options so might be more flexible in that regard.

I haven't been able to compare both amps thru the 4x12 in the big living room. I'm gonna get EL34s in the SS next month when the local tech amp guru gets back to town. Even with the 6v6s and thru the 2x12 you might say the Splawn covers the Ratt/Dokken compressed gainy tone over the Small Box. The Small Box is a little more open sounding and just sounds huge compared to Splawn not that the Splawn is wimpy. Even hitting the front end of the Small Box with a TC Spark in mid mode it still retains that big bottom end and openess. I'm betting the Splawn will sound big once I get the 34s and set it on top of the 4x12
