So back in the summer I did a trade with jonl here on the forum for a 79 Silverburst. Since then I've been gassing for another LP in a bad way and was able to snag this 73 custom from a guy off of TGP. Turns out we were only about a 2 hour drive from each other so we were able to meet up last night to avoid the dangers of UPS or Fedex getting their hands on it.

So far I'm loving it. It started as a fretless wonder but got a refret somewhere along the line which is perfectly fine by me as now it plays great! I'm told the bridge pickup is original and the neck is apparently a Duncan '59. Considering swapping the Duncan but we'll see. The Silverburst has an original in the neck and an Aldrich in the bridge so I'm considering replacing the Duncan on this one with an Aldrich. I haven't gotten to play it through my main rig yet but I'll definitely be doing that at practice on Monday.

I really like the 73's I bet its awesome with a refret. Those fretless wonders are like butter for awhile then it gets to be a work out real fast if you love to do a lot of bends.

To shadowfax29: Nice score!

Wheelman is correct on the frets. I have a 68 Custom and the original low frets are a real PITA to do any bending on, so I had mine refretted with the larger wire and it's great.

As for the pickups, be advised that the bridge pickup on that 73 is probably a patent # Gibson if it's original and it's DC resistance is likely to be less than 8k. I'm pretty sure the Aldrich is a lot hotter than that (I have one in a guitar here), and if you put it in the neck position it will likely overpower the bridge pickup making for an imbalance when switching pickups for volume, unless you want the neck pickup to be louder...not sure what you're after.

I also switched my pots/cap wiring to the 50's style so that I retained the highs when rolling down the volume knob from 10 and below. The standard high Z wiring in that guitar will roll off the treble pretty significantly if you roll down the volume knobs, so be aware of that. I can email you a diagram to 50's wiring if you like, it's just moving the tone cap to different lugs on the volume/tone pots in the cavity. Not hard to do at all.

Enjoy your Custom!

Jim

congratulations! Black Beauty is right...+ a million on refret which is nice too;)

Congrats! You've got a couple of nice LP's there. Why not put the two original Gibson pickups in one LP and the Aldrich/59 the other? One could be stock and the other the hot rod. I would definitely try the Gibson pickups without the metal covers on them, makes a world of difference.
My 2 cents.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

That definitely has crossed my mind. Might have to do some pickup swapping trying a few different combinations. For gigging purposes it would be nice to have a similar set up on each for the purposes of having one as main and then one backup. And yeah the covers are definitely coming off soon haha :D

Jim, thanks for the tip on the 50's wiring. After playing this for a bit, I'm definitely going to hit you up for a wiring diagram. Will shoot you a PM.

Dude, you got that one? That looks sick... I debated buying it myself. I ended up snagging my own '73 BB which will be here tomorrow... :)

HNGD dude!

Nice score, I love the black especially! If you don't like the 59 in the neck consider taking the stock one out of the silverburst and putting both original gibson hums in black lp as they probably match up better together.

Lesters are awesome.

BB Lesters? Fap material.

Congratz to the OP!! Nice axes Bro

Sweet guitars man. Love me a LPC. I may even justify one to myself here shortly. LPs are a guitar I was never into until I finally broke down ad actually bought one.

Hey, Shadowfax. I'm the person you met up with that sold you the LP. If you should decide to sell it, can you let me know. I've missed it and kinda regretted it ever since. Sorry for the weird stalker post, I can't PM yet.

Nice score!!  There is only one thing better than having a LP Custom!!

HNGD!

This is one that's been on my hit list for a while.
