Depends on what's in there. 500K volume and tones will get you a bit more top end. Playing with pickup height and pole pieces can yield alot of good results.
I used to have good luck with single coils when I added a Torres mid boost (passive) in place of the tone control. Added that extra little bump in the mids to actually make a bridge single coil in a strat more usable. Not sure if that's still available, but I'm sure something similar is somewhere.
You could put an active boost in there and get as much punch out of it as you want, but because of the nature of the pickups, they just won't ever sound exactly as full size buckers.
If you dig the guitar, I would try some options. If not, just sell it and find something with full size humbuckers.
