Hi all,

I'm in search of a power amp affordable and preferably not more than 50watts.

I wonder what people think about Peavey Classic 50/50 vs Mesa Fifty/Fifty.
I know the Mesa is more expensive but it seems that it also has more resealable value for the future in case I decide to sell it.
I've read comments about people really liking the Peavey 50/50 the used to have but they don't have it anymore. Should I just put a bit more money and get a Fifty/Fifty? Perhaps a SS power amp?

All comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks!

I like the Peavey 60/60 a bit better than the 50. The 50 is el84, the 60 is 6l6 and seems a little fuller.

Hi Mudder, Thanks for the reply.
That's some of the comments, the difference between the 6L6 and the EL84. Perhaps I should just go for the Fifty/Fifty since it has the 6L6?

Sure. The Mesa is a real solid piece. You could also look for a VHT 2/50/2, another highly considered power amp that is still reasonably priced.

And when I say reasonably priced I mean under $1k used, which may not be reasonable to you. Also, the VHT runs el34, I think. Great amp though.

There's a Mesa 50/50 for sale on TGP right now I think

Really good sounding, trouble free power amp. No bias to worry about, solid construction

If you happen to be located in the general Philadelphia area I have a Mesa 50/50 that I am looking to sell. It's pretty heavy so shipping would be a lot. If so let me know.

Seems that the Mesa is held in higher regard than the Peavey.
I used to have the 2:90 and I loved it but I'm looking for something less heavy and more affordable. The VHT is way out of my budget.
Gtrman, thanks for the offer, I'm located in Toronto so yes the shipping would be too much.
I might be able to get one of those around here.

I would stay away from the peveay 50/50. I have been running one with my randall rm4 preamp and when i use anything high gain it gets real mushy and i believe it due to the EL84 power tubes... On my low or mid gain modules it sounds pretty good just doesnt like high gain at all

HI Zepp,
Thanks for your reply.
From what I've heard, now I can tell that most people that like the Peavey 50/50 like it for a price-value ratio but as soon as they can they go for a larger tube power amp (EL34/6L6) specially people looking for high gain/metal tones, as these amps give better definition and a tighter lower end.

Is $250 for one of those Peavey a good deal? Seems like it is.

I would stick with the bigger power tubes myself....
Agree. I bought my 60/60 in the last couple months for about $350. It makes a difference.

That's a great price for the 60/60. Bigger tubes are winning I guess.

My issue is that I initially wanted a light power amp, I got rid off my 2:90 due to the weight and because it was too powerful for what I need now. Not playing huge venues any more.
I guess one can't have it all: full bodied sound vs light weight.

If may I ask, what style of music do most people in this thread play? We've talking about high gain so I'm assuming one (or several) of the variations/sub-genres of metal?

I'm going for a high gain tone (modern, heavy and tight) but I also want some versatility. I guess the versatility will come from my pre in this case.

engl e840 its pretty light weight and sounds great with hi gain preamps

Oh man, if I only had the money haha.
Unfortunately my budget is limiting my options. I can spend $500 tops included shipping (and duty/tax as I'm Canada).

I need to make a decision. I already found a Peavey for $250 shipped and a Mesa 50/50 for $500.
I'd like to go for the Mesa but since I need to get other things too I might go for the Peavey at the moment.

Yeah, it kind of sucks. If you want that big deep tone, you need big power. Of course, the volume will blow you out, but you dont get that same tone out of smaller amps.

I have a Triple Rectifier and a Mini Rectifier. The Triple sounds like a mack truck into your eardrum. The Mini sounds pretty good, but just doesnt have that extra element to it. Of course the Triple has ridiculous power, but nothing smaller has that tone. Wish it did ;)

I am sure the VHT power amps sound awesome also. I had a Deliverance 120 that was even worse than the Triple, but man it sounded HUGE with the KT88 power tubes.

You might look into a Matrix GT1000FX. It is solid state, about $800, but it is very popular right now. People say it has the huge tone and only weighs like 8 pounds.

I don't think you can go wrong either way.
Peavey is good for the money, Mesa is just plain good
Both are good deals
Not helping you pick one I guess

Shask: True, I've used the 2:90 and other 100watt heads and yes it really sounds different. The Matrix sounds like a good option but it exceeds my budget.

Business: You're right haha, you're not helping me pick one, but saying that my two options are actually good ones is good to me.

I guess I'll go for the Peavey, as I also need to spend some $$ on a 2x12 :D

For a nice 2x12 that isn't too spendy look at Avatar Speakers and White Box. I run my 60/60 into an Avatar 2x12, GSP1101 pre, and it's a super versatile and easy to run setup.

I recently bought a "Harley Benton" with V30's from Germany for a really good deal, sounds pretty good actually. The construction is 5/8 birch plywood. The only thin cheap is the tolex cover and the corners, which I'm Ok with considering the price I paid.

I thought of getting something else locally, but again: budget.
Thanks for the advice though, those Avatar and White Box look great.

I'll let you know what I decide to get. :)
