So I went for the Peavey Classic 50/50 and I'm waiting for a response on a Randall 212NXT.
I agree with people here that the Mesa would be an upgrade but budget dictates Peavey at the moment.

I'll let you know how did the pre+power+cab combo tuned out.

Sure. The Mesa is a real solid piece. You could also look for a VHT 2/50/2, another highly considered power amp that is still reasonably priced.
This.

You got the 2 most popular, yet I will agree that checking into a Matrix might also be worth while. It is not 50 watts, but will produce some great tones.

I have a 2/50/2 and a GT1000FX, very happy :D

Mesa Dyna Watt 20/20 or Marshall EL84 20 / 20. Both sound plenty huge...

I'd avoid el84's for heavy stuff
they tend to sound thin at low volumes, have a pretty narrow volume sweet spot, which is usually LOUD with a medium/high gain 15-20w amp, and they mud everything up at higher volume settings combined with lots of preamp gain
they surely have their place, but I really don't like them for high gain

Got the Peavey 50/50 and tried it with an MP1 3TM, pretty damn good sounding combo.
I'm not sure how the tight low end would change with larger tubes as people comment but I guess I'll find out if it is really an improvement when I have some extra $$ to get a Mesa 50/50, any louder than that I really don't need...although I could get a 2:90 ans use it in half power? LOL.
