I really did like the jam. Prince has been one of my fave overall artists since the 80's. Dont think of him as a guitarist though.
But he can throw down.

For years I have heard people talk about how great this guy is and I just don't get it. Especially the whole "great guitarist" thing. If he worked as hard to develop his chops as he has on his "I'm a coy little girl" image, then he may be worth a mention as a guitarist.
Sorry, I know this forum frowns on bashing other musicians unless they are well known on TGP, but I draw the line at Prince and U2 when it comes to pulling punches.

With all due respect....really? I just don't hear anything about his playing. He's good sure, but just compare Eric Gales to him. This is just guitar playing I'm talking about.

Not so much the lead work - the 2 or 3 guitar parts mixing complex chords in syncopated rhythms. Lots of people can do equal or better lead work. For me it is the way it is fused into the whole sound. I consider rhythm much more important than lead when listening to guitar players. I know a lot of people do not see it this way.

I am also a big fan of Hendrix, Page & Gilmour work ... But I do not think they are as good of guitar player as John McLaughlin & Paco DeLucia - But they are rarely mentioned around here. As far as technique goes these two blow away most guitar players. If you have ever seen John McLaughlin play a complex rhythm it is amazing. There is a lot of great guitar players .... it is only a matter of taste.

Yeh that about sums it up. Guy is a little weird...but puts out good music.

Complex is nice once in awhile, I like Al Di Miola and his crazy timing and changes but can only take so much of it before I need some 3chord rock and roll AC/DC

Majority of the people end up listening to 3 chord rock. Start adding more chords and changes and the music has less of a chance becoming a big hit. Boils down to people's attention span.

The guy can play every instrument and plat it well. He's a producer, composer, choreographer and the list goes on and the class of Women he can have...

Count me as part of the "what's so special?" group. I'm stunned by how many people think he's a guitar god. He's a solid player who has laid down some cool stuff, but I've heard absolutely nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking from him. He clearly worshiped at the alter of Hendrix and a few R&B greats (Ernie Isley, Ike Turner, Nile Rodgers, etc) and simply reproduces it...frequently with horrible tone.

Great songwriter and performer? Perhaps. Iconic guitarist? Hardly.

And his recent guitar breaking episode places him firmly in the all-time biggest douchebag hall of fame.

I am familiar with it. I agree it takes more than most people believe. Often the music is more complex than most traditional pop. Many of the musicians are much more talented than people understand. Sorry,talented yes and certainly does his own sort of thing although highly derivitive of those that came before him but to say he's the most well rounded (no) talented individual in the music world of all time is just silly.

I can't buy into the hype with this guy either. He has written some great songs, but so have a ton of other bands. His image kinda bugs me, that whole enigmatic symbol-formerly known as-now known as BS. In my opinion his tone and that mix was not happening. I have to say he does know how to pick out his bandmates though. I'm thinkin' he somehow bypassed the whole Craig's List route.

I agree that pop is complex nowadays production-wise, just not always in rhythmic and melodic complexity.
Same goes for hip hop, what I hear on commercial hip hop radios is god awful most of the time.

I agree ... most commercial hip hop is crap. I do like some of it. But I like a little of everything ...
