Paypal is worthless for any seller protection

I'm not comfortable with Reverb having bank information, or anything else for that matter.

That's the whole point for me, bro'.

PayPal is the only institution that has any of my bank details, and it's only a debit card that I physically deposit money to spend online into at my local bank branch. All purchases online are made using PP, so nobody can access account details, which is how I like it. I mean, if every man and his dog did what Reverb is doing now, your A/C details would be scattered all over the interwebs, and as they say in the classics, good luck with that.

Kind of a shame, but I've always found both to be shady, and would NEVER give either my bank account info, only credit cards, and only AMEX.
Anyways, nobody is buying guitars these days on these sites it seems! Go check the "sold listings in ebay for your fav brand, and I just keep seeing the same overpriced guitars on Reverb being listed continually.
Selling on forums requires building/maintaining a reputation which takes time, but is my personal favorite.
Selling difficulty has been going up for the past 2 years.

I don't see the fuss either. I've been using this method for about 4 years. Zero complaints. I get my money as soon as I post tracking, never a hiccup.

My complaints and occasional bad experiences have been with sellers. I hate that they allow sellers of used gear to use stock photos, for one, let dealers drop-ship, or post/list gear they don't have, and other B.S.

Buyers can be annoying too, but that's everywhere. Even here.

My point was that it's bad enough having to give it to a single entity, say PayPal in my case, and that I'm willing to make that sacrifice in order to be able to buy online.

That's just one "secure" commitment. If "everyone" went the way of Reverb, one's details would have to be disclosed to who knows how many businesses. That so-called-secure disclosure's odds of backfiring increase exponentially in this scenario, so whilst I acknowledge your belief that Reverb is secure, it's the principle of risk minimisation that informs my decision and M.O.

I would note to those concerned about giving them your banking info, all you're giving them are the numbers on the bottom of any check you write. it's the exact same thing you give your employer to direct deposit your paychecks. That's what happens, according to my understanding: when you sell, they put the money in your bank account.

Without authorization, they can't take money out of your banking account. I understand being paranoid about this, which is why I have that small banking account just for this kind of thing. I don't use my standard banking info. However, every bill in 2020 is pretty much direct payment: we hand out this kind of info all the time. It isn't 1980 where we write physical checks for payment and receive physical checks for work pay.

I don't know that I like it either, but it is what it is, and it certainly isn't out of line at this juncture.

I stopped using Reverb after they sided with a frivolous buyer. They let him keep my amp for 10 days before making him send it back, but refunded him promptly. I sent them the messages the buyer sent me to show them he was obviously lying to them, but they totally ignored it all and made the decision within hours of his complaint. I'll never buy or sell on Reverb again, and recommend against doing any business on their website. You can sell on there but it's just not worth it.

Does Reverb have the authority to access your bank account and take the money as they see fit?

Generally I avoid giving direct bank account access to any company. That gives them the ability to withdraw or deposit. Any mistakes, disputes or malicious behavior is hard to prevent and unlike a credit card, it’s hard cash gone. To me, might as well add them to your account as a joint account member, like a spouse or something.

Not sure about the details or how I feel about the Reverb thing yet, I need to read the agreement.

I try to sell as little online as possible, but some things just don't sell local easily. Some uncommon things some boutique pedals, etc.

I do what falls to my advantage tbh. It's safer, good to buy. Fuckheads having way too much protection as buyers do, I won't sell. Not safe to me.

It seems like electronic funds transfers are an implicit element of ecommerce, so you're going to be giving that info to someone. Most of us probably have debit cards, use ATMs, get our paychecks direct-deposited, or pay bills electronically to and from ACH-assessible accounts.

I would note to those concerned about giving them your banking info, all you're giving them are the numbers on the bottom of any check you write.

I pay all bills in-person with cash at the local P.O. The only commerce I engage in online is buying music gear, mostly plugins, via PayPal which is linked to a dedicated debit card that I also keep topped-up in-person.

IOW, I have never, nor do I foresee the need to provide any account details to anyone as long as I can continue this way with PayPal.

I realise that every man and his dog has moved to online banking, but I've steadfastly ignored the constant "encouragement" from general advertising, utility providers and my bank to make the switch.

Just sayin'. Maybe my stance on the Reverb thing might make more sense to those who were scratching their heads... if indeed anyone did... or cared.

I'm surprised you've managed that. I think most employers in the US won't issue checks anymore. Direct deposit is generally the only option available. I don't think I've been paid anything but direct deposit since the 90's for anything.

I'm surprised you can manage that. I set up all my bills as direct deposit here before I moved here. I couldn't have paid for first few months of them as I owned the house while I was still living 1200 miles away. (I could have mailed a check, I suppose, but what a PITA! ) This is a more recent change than the direct deposit payments, but now I can't image the time I used to spend taking care of bills. Now, it's automatic and I can reconcile in about 5 minutes for an entire month.

Yes, your stance is more understandable. I'd still suggest just opening a separate checking account with your make and just move the money through that account. Despite how safe I know everything is, I still do that for PayPal and Reverb. It's piece of mind to know I can cut the cord at any point if something goes too bad.

Between here and TGP, it seems like there's at least one thread each week where someone is butthurt by something Reverb/eBay/Paypal did, and suddenly the sky is falling. Nothing is stopping any of us from selling on the web without using the usual services. But we wanted someone else to have to manage the constructs needed to do that, and then we bitch when that entails compromises, as though we somehow didn't realize that using a commercial service doesn't give us the same autonomy as doing it without them. So much injustice, lol.
