New Rivera RockCrusher recording attenuator

Just saw this in a google search. I haven't seen a thread about it. Its a pretty big price jump from the normal model.

I am not too familiar with it but isn't it $300 more and does a lot more than the original? I might be wrong, but for Rivera quality I don't consider that a big price jump. If it were the same model that went up $300, then yeah...that's a big price jump.

To me $300 is a big price jump for just adding an EQ and speaker simulator. That said I haven't priced a speaker simulator either. By pushing this new model up to $800, that is starting to get to Aracom Attenuator area.

I hear you, but it is an eq and a speaker simulator. It is also Rivera not Behringer. If the name were Suhr would you question it, because it would sure cost at least an additional $300 to add additional features to a product such as that and keep the profit margin the same for them. Rivera has stopped making awesome products because they couldn't keep costs down. These are not large companies. You could always buy the orig product and use your own eq and speaker simulator if you found that more cost effective.

For example, I use two old Marshall SE100. Marshall licensed the GT speaker attenuator. I can't remember the model. It became to cost prohibitive for Marshall and they stopped making it. It was an awesome product and was not cheap. They are hard to find now. The GT product was expensive, itself. I am not sure if it is still made. Neither does exactly what the Rockcrusher does, but it is pretty close. Some companies have to do it on a smaller scale and it is more expensive for them to do so. Even Marshall, wasn't successful doing it with a high end product like the SE100. They were better off mass producing their powerbrake, which was far inferior.

A Palmer PDI-03 is nearly $700, and it's just a load with speaker emulation. A Rock Crusher+Radial JDX would run you $700 as well. This isn't a big price increase at all, for what it does. It's also MIA, which is saying something, IMO.

The real question is whether or not you need an attenuator+speaker emulation, or if you need just a load+emulation. Because $100 less gets you the great sounding PDI-03, but $200 more gets you the Torpedo Live, which, while just load+emulation, does a shit-ton more in terms of speaker emulation flexibility. The other factor is how good the speaker emulation is, what it sounds like, etc.

That is sort of my point. The Marshall SE100 didn't have EQ...it had like some speaker angles you could set. I have never really tried any of that on mine since I just use it for attenuation and I dabbled with the headphones, but it is pretty set and forget. There isn't a lot of control on the users behalf except for level. They were expensive too back then. I have to say, I think $300 seems reasonable. I love Rivera and they typically stand behind their products.

Looks very cool.

The RockCrusher was already the best sounding attenuator on the market, IME. This just makes it that much better. If I needed an attenuator, I would get this one without hesitation.

I saw an announcement about this in one of the namm news releases and I emailed Rivera about it, they said it should ship in the April time frame. With the eq on the speaker emu they said you can dial in different speaker types which I believe is unique to this product and would rock for live work. I already have the original rock crusher and love it. I'd like to get another one so I'm waiting for this and will probably get it instead. The other one I'd like to check out is the new Friedman unit but there isn't much on it out there yet.

Check this bad mama-jama out! I was informed today that Two-Notes is releasing an attenuator version this year.

Given the size of the RC, Rivera could have sized it 2U and offered a rack-mount kit - but no, that would have made sense!

The speaker simulator and EQ would be nice, but to me they are not worth the $300 up charge. I am fully aware that Rivera needs to make a profit and I am not suggesting that Rivera is trying to rip off anyone. And for the record I can't stand behringer.

The Marshall SE100 looks like a cool unit. I was only aware of the Marshall powerbrake, which I agree is a dog.

For Studio use you are probably much better off getting one without a speaker sim and use the line out with impulse responses in your DAW. But if you are trying to feed it into the PA live then I guess it seems like a nice option to have the EQ and speaker sim. Pretty big price tag for this one, but compared to whats out there like someone mentioned the price tag doesn't seem so bad.

$700.00 is peanuts! I purchased my Faustine DX2 for $700.00 then sold it for $1500.00 on CL. Cha-Ching! It was a good sounding piece, but I preferred the Rivera RC. Less than $700.00 wouldn't IME be competitive. The Aracom is priced at $800.00 I think? Ultimate (re-amp) isn't cheap either.

I spoke to Rivera today to see if they were going to offer a rack kit? No plans for doing so are in the works at this time.

Haha, I literally asked them about the rack kit for the 3rd time (since the release of the RockCrusher) last week. They told me the same so I'm planning on picking up a 2 space blank rack cover, cutting it in 1/2, bending it, drilling out the 2 holes on the sides to mount to the RockCrusher and then painting it in Hammertone to match. I hope to get it done within the next couple of weeks. Hopefully it works!

Please post some pics once it's completed. Rivera mentioned that they expect users to come-up with a DIY rack system... They know we want one, so why not just make the unit RM compatible to begin with?

And I agree, they know we want them.... Not sure why they can't put aside a couple-few days to plan, tool, and manufacture a bunch.
