I ordered a new R3 nut for my Charvel. Got this one from an ebay store - packaged on an Allparts card. German Schaller nut, says "made in Germany", but what a POS! Look at the machining and mold marks.

The vintage Floyd nut on my '85 Jackson is a work of art - shiny, smooth, perfect. This thing shows how far Schaller has fallen I guess.

Why is that bad? What function is hindered because of the machining marks on the side?

Function isn't hindered - but the quality sucks! "Made in Germany" used to mean something.

You're nitpicking. I can show you the exact same thing on my Gotoh, OFR and Schaller equipped guitars. There's nothing wrong with it. If it bothers you that much, you can sand it down and polish it up on your own, but nobody is going to see it, and it doesn't affect anything.

Look at it under a microscope and you'll really be bummed

That's some pretty dumb shit right there. You're PAYING good money for a product, it should look like someone gave a fuck. I run machine shop, and there's NO WAY we could give our customers surface finishes that looked like that. And "sanding it down and polishing it" will remove the plating which means it will rust...FAST. So unless you want a relic'd Floyd Nut, send it back.

Ah, someone who KNOWS good workmanship from bad!

That's my point exactly, if I paid $9.99 for a licensed Floyd nut, I wouldn't complain, and wouldnt expect much in terms of quality. But a made in Germany Schaller should be way nicer.

Shit like that kills me. What if Code001 bought an amp and the Tolex was all falling off of it...it doesn't affect the tone or functionality of the amp, so who cares if it cost 2 or 3 (or more) thousand ? WTF ? Why shouldn't you expect quality ? Would you buy a new car with scratches all over it ? The car runs and drives the same !

Right.

There are some that say why buy a Rolex when a Casio does the same thing. I am in the Rolex camp!

Yeah Germans are usually know for attention to detail. I like well made stuff, (I have Snap-on and Cornwell tools even) and I am willing to pay extra for nice craftsmanship. If I wanted something that looks like it was made In China, I would expect to be able to get if for MIC prices.

AndyK, got any pics of that 85 Jackson Soloist ? That must be a sweet piece. I have a Shannon Slime Green one that I love. The early necks are the cat's ass.

Yes, they are known for that...and REALLY twisted porn \:D/ \:D/

I had a Shannon when they came out, great guitars - very vintage Jackson.

My '85:

2 really great things to be know for. It nearly trumps the whole WWII booboo if you ask me.

Wow ! I half expected it to have a Kahler, very unusual to have a Floyd in 85, that usually meant you bought the Floyd and sent it in. Are you the original owner ?

I have an early (pre 500 serial #) RR black/gold and it's my best playing and sounding guitar for real heavy stuff, and the neck is to die for.

I bought it about 10 years ago, from the original owner, who basically kept it in it's case since '85. NO wear, frets perfect. Only problem was a yellowed pearl finish, so I had B&W refinish it. Looks brand new now.

The Jackson invoice says "Soloist w/ Floyd Rose (customer provided)".
