Just got through the new album and IMO it’s fucking brilliant. Everything you expect and want from them. Adam Jones’ guitar tone rips like a circular saw through wet plywood. It’s actually tight and growls like a beast. His best tone yet IMO. AWESOME ALBUM!!!!!!

Danny Carreys play guitar on this album????

lol @ Danny playing guitar.

I'm a huge Tool fan. I actually went into this album expecting to be disappointed after listening, a handful of times, to the one or two of the songs released already. They sound good, but I was like meh... 10K Days V2. Totally forgot about the album release today until a friend posted a photo of her limited edition CD on FB this morning. So I stopped by Target and grabbed one. Listened to a few tracks in my Uber on the way home and I was impressed by how great the production sounded...

At home listening now on some headphones. And wow... the album is in a word: Gorgeous.

The production is jaw dropping. Just incredible. I've not heard an album with sound quality like this before. You can hear EVERYTHING. Like you're there in the room with the band, surrounded by the music. And this is just regular MP3 quality (you get a free download with the album) on my Macbook. Just godly production quality here.

The music is great. Not as angry and aggressive as their past stuff, but it fits the theme of the album and of the band growing older. The song "Invincible" is a perfect allegory for the band at this phase of their careers and of their lives I guess. The music is powerful and grooves in typical Tool fashion.

Also I love that there's an actual drum solo track where Danny grooves along to a synth riff. Pretty rad.

pushit is a brilliant song, that has a structure, climax, a story and the sound is almost magical. Not just hard panned metal guitars all the time.

don't know what this is?

The Barresi production makes the band sound even more boring. Hard panned, chrystal-clear guitars, drum exercises.
The ever the same recycled pull off palm mute riff. I do not get this. I would let anyone play that boring shit that in my band and I don't have platinum records.
It is a shame.

I fell asleep with the laptop on and refreshing the page waiting for release last night, but I bought it at work this morning. I was coming and going from the computer all day but what I heard sounded great, can't wait to go through it on headphones this weekend. I'm usually not a fan of 12 minute songs though.

Well then your in luck cause one of the songs is 15 mins long , it’s pretty badass though

And his tone is as good as Adam’s!  Late night last night, running on fumes!

I'm loving it, and was expecting to be disappointed.

Something of note, in the liner the band (Adam) thanks Bogner, Diezel, Mesa, Rivera and Fryette.

I fucking love it.

I wonder what the specifics are. Diezel is obviously the VH4 and Mesa is probably the cabinets. I wonder what Bogner, Rivera, and Fryette gear he used. Rivera may be the K-Tre from 10,000 Days, but the Bogner and Fryette are a mystery.

I'm looking forward to a Baressi or Jones interview on the tone. I agree, his tone is killer on this album, but so is the overall production. Spent much of my workday with headphones on listening to the album. Now at home on my Sonos system enjoying it.

Bogner Uberschall...and I heard a rumor he was using a Fryette Deliverance. But who knows...

Just finished the first listen through. Been busy all day.

I dig it!!! I don't even hate the techno-shit (Chocolate Chip Trip specifically). Reminds me of Logan's Run sound track. In fact... I should fucking put the Blu-Ray on with sound down and play the album.

7empest, Descending, and Pneuma are badass.

They were also thanking an individual person at each of those companies Peter, Reinhold, Paul, Steve and someone from Mesa.
So I don't think they would be thanking a person at Mesa just because he's used their cabinets for years.
I'm thinking he brought the Rectifier out again for some parts.. at first listen I was hearing at least four different guitar amps throughout the songs. Much of his syncopated open low E riffing is clearer and dryer than usual so I'm thinking I'm hearing a Fryette on some of those parts.

I just find it boring, and the production sterile. Some good moments in the songs, for sure. That chocolate chip track sounds like something I would make in Fruity Loops stoned, and then delete.
