I bought a few days ago a brand new 6534.
I'm very precautionary person so now I'm thinking to buy backup tubes.
For this moment -only power tubes cause I've got few spare preamp tubes.

But what tubes ? EL34 , E34L , KT77 , 6CA7 ?
I know there are many informations about the differences between this tubes but I want to know your experience about this glass boys.
I very like the mids , but I want more metal sound.

Then get a 5150 ? :D
I liked the 6534+ better myself, get some KT77 if you want a tube resembling the 6L6 more

Ok. I'm still in the same place.
There is other thing. I know that regular 6505+ was biased too cold and setting the bias was strongly limited.
What is the situation on 6534 ?

I'm asking because currently I don't have a bias meter so really If I want to change power tubes - I don't have opportunity to set the bias correctly...

Anyone know something ? And the 6ca7 are dirrect replacement for el34 , and I will have to perform mods to my peavey ?

"Too cold" is relative. Some amps are meant for colder bias. IE I just got a SLO100 and the recommended bias is 22-25 ma, which is considered "too cold" for other amps.

Oh, but how about the resy of my question ?

I can get a universal meter and put the cables in the test points in the back of an amp but I heard that this points are very innacurate ...

Yeah the test points on the Peavey are useless
You can get a good cheap bias tester for 20-30$

Yeah I know , but I;m living in Poland currently so it will be a problem.

There is any way to get the bias set properly ? I didn't touched the little potentiometer since I bought this amp and I don't know if the current value of bias is good for condition of my amp.

Hello, anyone ?

Use your ears. Start off cold, and adjust from there. They do have enough sweep to get hot, so I wouldn't max it out.
I would agree with KT77's as well. They are the shit in my JVM!

napalmdeath - thanks !
In which way I can recognize that my bias is too hot or cold ?

For the present, I'm playing at my home to the time when I will find band. It's really good at low volume , not as bad as you might expect.

tad 6l6's is what I like in all my old 5150's or 6505's ..tung sol press except v1 ..alwayse used diezel spec ruby's in v1 ..not to be that guy but this subject has been covered here on RT a 1000 times. JJ's are junk tubes ..sure the 34l sound decent but JJ's are poorly made tubes..anytime Ive got them in a used amp I try to switch them out before they fail..since they always take a crap

I strongly disagree that JJ's are junk...however, we are all entitled to our own opinions. :) I have had nothing but excellent results from all my JJ's. I have been using them for many years. I always buy mine from www.eurotubes.com who do an excellent job in matching the power tubes and have high standards in their testing. JJ's are their specialty. That may be the difference in my experience in JJ's vs. mesa50w's experience.

My current 5150 III was factory loaded with JJ tubes (6L6GC), and it sounds superb.

Right on glad you have had good luck with them ..I had 3 sets of el34's go down( one set from eurotubes) so Ive never looked back. Like you said to each their own though

As I've said in another thread, the JJ E34L had problems when they were used by Diezel, they now recommend JJ KT77. It all depends on the tube; JJ makes some good 6L6, while their E34L and EL34 are not so good. Chinese tubes are the opposite; crappy 6L6, pretty good EL34 and good 12AX7s

Ok , at this time I cannot but this probe.
I looked at the back of amp and saw that the bias potentiometer was alll the way right(maxed). This is cold or hot setting ?

Usually clockwise is cold on Peavey's

Anyone know what is the scheme for preamp tubes in 6534 ?
I mean which is V1 , PI etc ...
Or maybe it's the same as the regular 6505 plus ?

V1 is closer to input 99% of the time
Can you be more specific ? I'm not tech, I only open my amp when I change the tubes and that is all.

Any way to identify the which is which ?
I found that site , look at the 5 picture from the top :
http://www.bustedgear.com/repair_Peavey ... nts_3.html
On this picture we have good view on the preamp tubes and due to this scheme :
http://www.google.pl/search?hl=pl&site= ... B600%3B300
Preamps tube from the top to bottom are : V4, V3,V5,V2,V1,V6. Correct ?
